Consciousness to Frank was returning very slowly. As if he was about to wake up, even heard some voices but then again was swallowed by darkness. The eyelids seemed to weigh a ton, and the beating in his head didn't let him concentrate at all. Frank finally pushed harder himself and managed to open the eyes even though it took him almost all of his mental straight. The white ceiling was the first thing he saw, then the same white walls and a bunch of devices around. Part of the wires from them stretched toward him. And they were producing a very annoyingly beeping sound that made him want to go back to the warm darkness of unconsciousness.
Frank tried to call someone, but instead, only strange wheezing escaped from his mouth. Although this sound still attracted someone's attention. Ryan's worried face appeared in his view.
"Are you with us, pal?" - He asked, examining Franky carefully. His eyes were full of concern, that was kind of unexpected for such a snappy guy.
Frank only managed to mumble something in response. The tongue was like a piece of wood and did not want to move normally.
"Maybe you want something? Maybe water or food?" - Ryan's voice sounded funny. As if he was in a panic. The guy started frantically search the room with his eyes for something.
"Yea! Don't forget to offer him some message." - Came an angry voice of Tony from behind. - "The doctor clearly said not to do anything and call him when Frank's awake. And how are you going to give him anything with this tube in his throat?"
Only after this phrase, Frank finally realized that he had something stuck in his mouth. His throat was numb, but he still sensed the tube inside and instantly felt himself choking. Frank tried to raise his hands to remove the mask from his face, but nothing happened. He just couldn't do it.
"Calm down, bud!" - Tony said pacifyingly, noticing how his friend's eyes widened, and he began to twitch and gasp strangely.
"What are you standing here for ?! Quickly get the doctor." - Tony shouted at Ryan. Shifter surprisingly didn't even flinch on such treatment, and hurriedly rushed to the door. Meanwhile Tony turned back to Frank, trying to reassure his friend.
Only about two minutes later, Ryan appeared again, already dragging a man in a white robe with him. The doctor tried to break free, but the face of the shifter was so threatening that he had no choice but to comply. Having dragged him the bed, the shifter pushed the paramedic forward, showing with his whole look that it was better to hurry up, or...
Under the stern gaze of Ryan, the doctor quickly began to relieve Frank of the tubes and check his general condition. Then satisfied with his inspection, he finally, with the help of Tony and Ryan, carefully lifted the top of the bed, allowing Frank to sit down and look around.
It immediately became clear why he could not raise his hand. The right hand had an IV and was tied to the handrail, apparently so that the patient does not hurt himself if he accidentally jerks. But the left one ...
Frank, as if bewitched, looked at the empty sleeve of the hospital shirt and tried to grasp the reality. The feeling that the hand was still in place did not leave. But it was not there, and a caring memory immediately threw pictures of the incident before him.
Huge shifter bear and sea of blood. Memories began to overwhelm the guy within his head. He felt as if he was drowning and at the same time, could not move to save himself. Panic, fear, and wild anger mixed everything inside Frank's head.
But for Frank, this was not the first time. These feelings already haunted him once, and he knew how to fight them.
"Not this time" - he thought to himself, clenching his teeth. Focusing on one point somewhere on the opposite wall, Frank took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, clearing the mind from unnecessary images. Concentrating on this he didn't even hear as the doctor said something. Seeing that the patient was not responding to his words, doc was ready to inject a sedative into the IV drip.
" Don't." - croaked Frank, stopping him. - "I can handle it. This is just a hand. I have lost much more in my life before. No big deal."
Tony's face instantly darkened, and Ryan looked worriedly at the new friend, trying to understand what he meant.
"Later." - Frank said, seeing that Ryan wants to ask something. - "Better tell me how it all went."
"Well..." - the guy drawled, shrugging. - "By the time you tore this Clark guy with a grenade to pieces, I managed to deal with the other four. And then I grabbed you and ran out. That's all."
The guy didn't really look concern about all of this.
"So you still won or not?" - Frank tried to clarify once again, seeing that the guy forgets about the most important thing.
Ryan grimaced, and a shadow passed over his face.
"Oh! Ammm...I am not sure..." - He finally squeezed out, looking a bit embarrassed. Seems like he actually completely forgot why they were going there in the first place.
"Gash! Dude, how could you?" - Frank chuckled, shaking his head.
'What's the difference anyway?!" - Shrugged Ryan indifferently. - "We crashed almost all of the top brass of Watchers. All those who were doing bidding to Ian. Mr. Gray, that old man who was in the dungeon will make sure that decent people come to power this time. Winterbourne's rule was never to his taste. This old fox is very cunning and cautious. He won't lose this opportunity. Believe me."
Frank nodded, satisfied with his answer for now. And then looked around.
"Where's Greg?" - He finally asked in surprise. If Tony was here, then their part of the plan should already be completed. It is strange that Greg was not the first person Franky saw near his bed, vomiting all the bad jokes about his new onehanded style. Greg always had a strange way to support his friends.
But as soon as he said these words, both the guys started. Ryan looked away, and Tony nervously ran a hand through his hair. His face became grim and severe.
"Sorry, Frank. We f*cked it up ..." - he began looking up at a friend.
" What?" - Frank asked not believing his ears.
But Tony's answer was drowned by a wild roar behind the wall. It was not even a howl. More like a mad, heartwrenching bestial cry.
"What the hell is it?" - Frank asked, jerking around.
" This is Lana." - quietly answered Tony. - "We had to put her in chains until she is fully recovered, and we'll think of what to do by then."
Frank frowned, his lips stretched in a thin line.
"What the hell is going on, Tony ?!" - He demanded, tugging his hand, which was still attached to the handle. Anthony winced but answered.
"The plan failed, Frank. We cannot open our mouths at the General Assembly. Otherwise, we'll never see Greg again."
