Chapter 83: Epilogue

Givontair:

"Do you think a simple priest can handle this?" Sorix asks, as he takes out the glass prison of the Dread. "I still can't believe that the Dread was sucking out the mana of the world."

"Well, you can tell that there is more mana in the air, now," I say, as I take the glass babble from his hands. I approach the basin with holy water, and drop the sphere within. The priest then begins his chanting.

I listen with one ear, as the man begins to wave his hands around, bright white mana on his fingertips. Sorix, as someone who renounced the Dread, stands by my side. Even now, I can see that him being in the temple bothers him.

I glance at Nathaniel, who has a sour expression on his face. I can understand him. His parents won't get the justice they deserve.

A part of me wants for Ajax to at least be brought before a judge. Yet, I know, better than anyone else, that if he does that, the rest of the dragons will have to follow. No judge is going to look favorably at my kind.

The sphere cracks, and the water turns black. For a moment, I think that this is it. The Dread goes free, and creates another mana extinguisher. Yet, just as I am about to shake my head at the lost opportunity, the statue of Harika begins to cry tears of blood. Sorix takes a hold of my hand.

"Do you think...?" He begins, only for a ball of light to appear before him. It seeps into him, and then exits his body, only to go into the basin with the contaminated water. Sorix closes his eyes, and begins to breathe in large gulps of air. Something black begins to drip out of his mouth. He wipes at it, but it keeps on dripping down.

"Are you ok?" I ask him, when he bends over.

"I... I think I am being cleansed," not even a second after he says that, another ball of light goes out of the statue, and into Nathaniel. Just like how it was with Sorix, there is a black liquid dripping from his mouth.

"I think this is the end of necromancy," Ajax says, as a ball of light passes through him. Unlike how it went with Sorix and Nathaniel, he just breathes out a puff of smoke. His eyes narrow, when his mana changes. "Hey, who gave you the right to restrict my shape-shifting?"

"Is this how you feel?" I ask my father. He nods. His mana begins to vibrate, but he can't change. Not even to the form of a drake.

Nathaniel smiles brightly at that. I can see that he gets some closure, out of Ajax becoming weaker. Yet, it is not the justice, he sought after. When we are all cleansed, I look back into the basin. The water is pure again, and there is no trace of the glass babble. I turn to Nathaniel.

"How are you feeling?" I ask him. He smiles at me.

"The constant headache I got ever since becoming a necromancer is gone," Nate looks at Ajax next. "I just don't understand how he got away scoot free."

"You call having to make do with changing only when the moon allows it scoot free?" Ajax grumbles. Erik takes a hold of his sleeve, and tugs.

"Grandpa, you have to make amends. Take little steps, but take them now," the boy sounds wiser than his years. I smile at my son, my heart overflowing with pride.

"Well, I still have my mana pool. I guess, if Giv doesn't mind, I can take some lessons on healing from the two of you," Erik gives him a beaming smile. Ajax returns it with a small smile of his own.

"How are we going to explain to the people, that necromancy is now a dead art?" Sorix asks. I shrug.

"They will find out eventually. It is for the best, if we don't tell anyone about that. What we did, needed to happen," I say, and then look at the priest. He is looking at the basin with wonder in his eyes.

"I can't believe the Dread is gone," he whispers. "A new age is coming."

"Something will just fill the vacuum that the Dread left behind," Sorix comments. I roll my eyes at him.

"Oh, have some faith in Harika, why don't you? It is not like there is a reincarnation process that deities go through," I say, and Sorix chuckles.

"If there is, the Dread will come for us," I don't doubt that. Yet, I know for a fact, that our destinies are once more in our hands. With the death of the necromantic deity, there won't be any more prophecies. I won't become a soul eater, Sorix won't have to turn everyone into shambling corpses. Erik will get to live out his childhood, with the only voice in his head, being his own.

We leave the temple, and I look around Amestavora. It is as pretty place to settle and raise a child, as any. Besides, now that the Dread is not spreading sicknesses, I can take some time off with being a healer. Mend my relationship with my father, and get to know Sorix and Nathaniel better. Not to mention, I will be able to give Erik more of my time.

Erik lets go of Ajax, and comes to take a hold of my hand.

"Giv, can we go to the park? I want to feed the ducks," Erik says. I snort at that.

"You have classes in an hour. Don't think I have forgotten," I ruffle his hair, to which he responds by huffing. He targets Ajax next.

"Grandpa, can we go feed the ducks?" Erik whines. Ajax looks me straight in the eyes, and then gives me a smirk.

"That depends, kiddo. Am I your favorite family member?" I sigh at that, and rub the bridge of my nose. Leave it to Ajax, to always want to be the best.

"You have classes," both Sorix and Nathaniel say at the same time. Nathaniel adds. "We can put it to a vote. I don't like your chances."

Erik pouts, and goes back to Ajax's side. He has gone a long way, from the child I found in the ruins. I am glad, that he has warmed up to us.
