CHAPTER 63: OPERATION “SAKURA”

The sun has set six times since that day.

I devised a plan, gathered personnel and supplies.

As a saying in Yapani, “The work is good, the equipment is good, now just watch the results…”

“The time is right.”

We finally embark on an operation to capture the sacred mountain without using force.

 Operation “Sakura” has started.

~3rd Person Perspective~

It’s been six days since the Hero Party “Middle Management” attacked.

Inanaki Spirit Mountain is still on high alert.

The reason for this is because the Middle Boss, Senri, did not give the order to stop.

There was no order not to lift the high alert.

But neither did she tell them to lift it.

So the (employee) monsters had no choice but to tacitly agree to do what was best for the dungeon.

Therefore, for the past six days, not a single person has left work at the Inanaki Sacred Mountain.

Even Komainu Angata and Ungata, who work as gatekeepers, are no exception.

“…” (A)

“… Hey, Agata.” (Un)

“…” (A)

“A-un!” (Un)

“…Huh!?” (A)

Komainu Agata finally came to his senses at the call of Ungata.

He shook his mane and blinked his eyes.

“Sorry, Ungata, I seemeth to have fallen asleep for did bit…” (A)

“Nay wonder, thee and I haven’t hadst a decent catch but a wink for the past four days.” (Un)

“Hng… In the past, we couldst work for a week without sleeping, but I guesseth we can’t did beat aging…” (A)

“Absolutely.” (Un)

-This is a lie, of course.

It goes without saying that their memories have been tampered with in order to make themselves look better when they were young.

“However, Senri-sama is working without taking a breaketh.” (A)

“There is nay way we can afford to catch but a wink in such conditions.” (Un)

“What is our duty?” (A)

“To guardeth the gate.” (Un)

The two guardians steeled themselves and straightened their postures.

They were standing there with nothing but their will.

The drowsiness that had overtaken them had robbed them of their ability to make normal decisions, and they were unaware of it.

“…Tis three o’clock.” (A)

“Yond’s right…” (Un)

“How many days hast hath passed since yond Hero Party cameth…” (A)

“Cometh on…” (Un)

The two were so in tune with each other that they were even called Aun in a single breath, but even they are not able to overcome fatigue, and the words they exchanged weren’t as snappy as usual.

And while they were exchanging words like that.

“…What the!” (Un)

Normally, they would have noticed it at the same time, or even earlier, but in this case, Ungata was the first to detect something strange.

After a delay, Agata’s clinging drowsiness dissipates at once, and he is also ready for battle.

In the darkness, there was an intruder ahead–

“Really!” (Voice)

However, the sound of such an easygoing voice caused Agata and Ungata to lose their composure.

“What is yond…?” (A)

“A human child…? Nay, nay… they’re too ‘small’.” (Un)

As the intruders climbed the stone steps, they were met by a trio of small-really small girls.

By the way, the word “small” here does not mean “young”.

They were really small as if they were miniature versions of human girls.

However, besides their size, there are two other things that are definitely different from humans.

One, their bodies are somehow faintly luminous.

Two, they had thin, transparent wings growing out of their backs.

“I’m really hungry!” (Fairy 1)

“Cookies are delicious!” (Fairy 2)

“Let’s have some fast!” (Fairy 3)

It was like they were on a field trip.

For a while, the komainus were so relaxed that they just watched.

As the girls walked happily and playfully past the Komainu, they were about to pass through the torii gate…

“”Ah… halt!!”” (A & Un)

The two of them came to their senses at the same time and raised their voices.

One of the trios is shocked because of the sudden shouting that her shoulders tensed.

“Huh…?” (Fairy 1)

“What? That was surprising~” (Fairy 2)

“Waaaaah…!” (Fairy 3)

“Oh, Lulu cried …” (Fairy 1)

“Uncles! People will be surprised if you suddenly shout at them!” (Fairy 2)

“No, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to scare you…” (A)

“Ho, Agata! what art thee apologizing? We’re the gatekeepers! We’re just doing our job!” (Un)

“Oh yeah, yeah, um…”(A)

Agata regained his composure, then corrects his posture again, and looks down at the three girls with a stern look.

His chest still twinges when he was watching the girl who was crying after being screamed at, but that was also his job, so he steeled his heart.

“…I’ve hath heard of these creatures, those ladies are fairies.” (A)

“Doth thee knoweth of those folk Agata?” (Un)

“I’ve hath heard of those folk, they’re liketh spirits yond liveth in the trees and plants, those gents behold liketh halflings with wings on their backs, I’ve hath heard those folks basically harmless, but…” (A)

“ Wherefore art those ladies at a lodging liketh this…” (Un)

“I knoweth not, but we’d better beest careful.” (A)

“I concur.” (Un)

Agata and Ungata cleared their throats.

Both are unsure, but it’s worth being cautious. They then turn to the Fairy Trio.

“Children.” (A)

“ Doth thee knoweth where thou art?” (Un)

Both talk to the fairies with an intimidating tone that was even more exaggerated by both Agata and Ungata.

However, their reaction was different from what they expected, the three replied with cheerful expressions.

“You don’t know? It’s the Inanaki Sacred Mountain you know?” (Fary 1)

“I heard the view from the top is really nice!” (Fairy 2)

“I’m looking forward to it!” (Fairy 3 => Lulu)

The trio then starts giggling again.

…They seem to have mistaken it for a tourist spot or something.

Agata and Ungata held their heads.

“…I’m sorry, but we can’t let anyone through here.” (A & Un)

Both Agata and Ungata sighed then the Fairy trio froze.

“Huh?” (Fairy 1)

“Why?” (Fairy 2)

“Why are you picking on us…?” (Lulu)

Fairies looking up at them with watery gazes.

Although both of them were a bit disheartened, work was still a priority for them.

“I’m not picking on thee!” (A)

“Tis just the way it is!”

“…no matter what?” (Fairy 1)

“Please!” (Fairy 2)

“Is it so much to ask?” (Lulu)

“I careth not how much thee asketh, I can’t doth what I can’t doth!” (A)

“Stingy!” (Fairy Trio)

The fairies stuck out their tongues, turned on their heels with angry shoulders, and sat down in the middle of the road.

“I—don’t care! We’ll do it here!” (Fairy 1)

“If so, we’ll do it here!” (Fairy 2)

“I won’t give it to those doggos!” (Fairy 3)

They frowned a little after being called doggos, but that’s what children are.

“…Doth thee bethink yond this is a valorous idea, Agata?” (Un)

“Well, um, our job is just to receiveth of those trying to cometh through the torii, so there shouldst beest nay problem letting others consume their food in the vicinity.” (A)

“Thou art belike right.” (Un)

That’s right, that’s right, Agata and Ungata nodded at each other many times.

The two of them are considered to be the most short-tempered and nagging of the Inanaki Sacred Mountain, but they are actually very lenient with children.

After they found out that the girls were not a threat to the Inanaki Sacred Mountain, they barely maintained their stern expressions, but their eyes were those of good-natured old grandfathers looking at their granddaughters.

The fairies didn’t seem to notice their gaze as they spread out the “bentou” they had brought with them. [T/N: Bentou are Japanese packed meals.]

“Can’t wait! Can’t wait!” (Fairy 1)

“Goblin-san’s lunch, so fun!” (Fairy 2)

“Today seems to be called sushi!”(Lulu)

At that moment, the ears of the Komainu twitched simultaneously.

“…did thee heareth what those girls hath said at?” (A)

“I hath heard it, Agata!” (Un)

“They forsooth hath said sushi!” (A)

“How nostalgic it all sounds…!” (Un)

Sushi. [T/N: Sushi is a Japanese rice dish made with raw fish, other proteins, and vegetables. It is probably the quintessential Japanese dish.]

They repeated that word, as if they can taste the sound of the word.

“Fresh raw gudgeon (fish) on top of soft, fluffy rice…” (A)

“Raw gudgeon (fish) is hard to did beat, but I once consumed an offering from the humans hath called perilla leaf sushi, and twast delicious…” (Un) [T/N: Perilla leaves are from herbaceous plants that are usually eaten with meat and fish in Japanese and Korean dishes.]

“I’ve eaten eel sushi as well, the sweetened sauce wast excellent…” (A)

“The carp sushi I consumed, once thee tryeth it, thee’ll beest addicted–” (Un)

At the same time, Agata and Ungata sighed.

It was the hometown across the sea that they remembered from far away.

The taste of sushi that they had once eaten there came back to life on their tongues, and before they knew it, their mouths were wet with saliva.

“I didn’t realizeth yond sushi hadst madeth its way to the west.” (A)

“Maybe the world is bawblinger (smaller) than we bethink.” (Un)

“Either way, tis a coincidence.” (A)

“Yeah, next timeth thee hast a day off, thee might wanteth to wend into town for a biteth….” (Un)

They looked at each other and then at the faeries.

Even in a foreign land like this, sushi—the taste of their homeland—is being enjoyed by children.

What could be more delightful than that…

Agata and Unkata watched the girls with warm eyes.

And then, out of the corner of their eye, the faeries who were finally able to see the lunchboxes said,

“Wow! This Looks delicious! Cured ham sushi…….!” (Fairy Trio)

–At that moment, Agata and Ungata froze.

“…Cured ham.” (A)

“Sushi…?” (Un)

They recited it again as if they were chewing on it, and looked at each other.

Not knowing the feelings of their observers, the fairies corrected their posture.

“Then everyone! Put your hands together!” (Fairy 1)

“Yes!” (Fairy 2)

“Thanks for the meal!” (Fairy Trio)

“—Wait a minuuuuute!” (A & Un)

Agata tried to jump at the fairies, and Ungata suppressed him in a hurry.

“Halt Agata!” (Un)

“Well, let’s go! That’s… that’s not sushi!” (A)

“I understand mine own feelings but leaveth, not thy posteth!” (Un)

Agata tries to leap away with bloodshot eyes and Ungata is desperately suppressing him.

The two of them were in a frenzy in front of the torii gate.

 The girls, however, were unconcerned.

Their cheeks were smiling as they tasted sushi the size of a pinky nail.

“Delicious!” (Fairy 1)

“Rice pudding sushi is so sweet, awesome!” (Fairy 2)

“Lulu loves you sushi-san!” (Lulu)

“That’s not sushi!! That’s not sushi!!” (A)

“Suppress thyself Agata!” (Un)

Agata is suppressed by Ungata grappling with him.

Agata clenches his teeth and he looks like he’s crying bloody tears.

“Guuuu, that sushi… it’s not sushi…” (A)

“Oh, halcyon (calm) down, Agata! there’s weird sushi in Yapani too. That’s one of those!” (Un)

“But that’s pork! Pork sushi! Pork sushi is outrageous…!” (A)

“Yond’s what kids doth! Calm down for a second! I knoweth how thee feeleth! I knoweth what thou art bethinking…” (Un)

“–Haa! It was delicious!” (Fairy 1)

“What’s the next sushi?” (Fairy 2)

“Well… oh! Here it is! Our biggest one! It’s Rainbow Fruit Roll Sushi!” (Fairy 1)

“Rainbow Fruit Roll Sushi…?” (A)

“Take heed Agata !! Cometh back!” (Un)

Ungata desperately suppresses Agata, who has completely forgotten himself.

While they were making a ruckus, the fairies looked at them with peeved gazes.

“… Doggo-sans, isn’t it bad manners to make a ruckus during a meal?” (Fairy 1)

“The sushi’s taste will be ruined you know…?” (Fairy 2)

“Chi… No! It’s not sushi! Real sushi is sushi with raw fish on top of it…!” (A)

“On top of rice…” (Fairy 1)

“Raw…?” (Fairy 2)

The fairies looked at each other—They giggled and chuckled.

“Doggo-san is funny!” (Fairy 1)

“If you eat something raw you’ll get a tummy-ache!” (Fairy 2)

“That won’t be delicious you know!” (Lulu)

――Even Ungata lost his temper at this.

He ran off with Agata, not caring where they were going.

“Get on!” (Un)

“Huh?” (Fairy Trio)

“”Just get on!”” (A & Un)

Without saying a word, they picked up the faeries sitting on the ground and carried them on their backs.

“”We’ll feed you real sushi!”” (A & Un)

――After saying that, They ran away someplace.

 And only silence came after.

“…The first stage is complete.”

The silence was broken by the voice of a boy.

The next moment, there was a crash and a boy emerged from the bushes at the back.

Needless to say, it was Narugoa.

Following him, his friends appeared one after another from the bushes.

In addition to the five members of the “Middle Management” Hero Party, there were many other figures there.

Most of them were either monsters that Narugoa had called out to him directly or employee monsters that he had summoned from the Cave of Silence using [Summon], just like the faeries.

“–Let’s go, everyone! Kobold squad, get to work! Let’s get to work!”
