Chapter 22

In the afternoon of that day, at the Brunel Police Station.

Since I didn’t have enough time to go to Kint, I reluctantly chose to use the police station’s telephone. There was no other option, even if Eden was present.

As I entered the police station, I saw a group of villagers chattering in one corner.

When Eden, who was interrogating a man by holding his ear, spotted me, he greeted me.

“Miss Cherry, thank you for letting me stay overnight at your house. I apologize for not properly expressing my gratitude.”

As he spoke, the noisy police station suddenly fell silent.

It was just a small voice, yet everyone seemed to be eavesdropping on our conversation.

I wanted to run back outside, but I pretended as if nothing was wrong and replied.

“Thank you. It’s nothing… Anyway, can I borrow the phone?”

To avoid further questions, I asked Eden for the phone and he replied with a look of bewilderment.

“Miss, thank you for letting me stay overnight yesterday, but this is a police station. It’s not a place where you can lend the phone to anyone.”

He’s surprisingly inflexible for someone who slept over at our house. From his actions and demeanor, Eden seemed like a thug, but he surprisingly valued principles and rules.

I shrugged and asked him, “Why? I used to borrow phones in Benton all the time.”

In the capital, there were several public phone booths, and places like hotels, train stations, and post offices allowed people to use their phones for a fee.

‘We don’t have a phone booth yet, so it’s inconvenient. I heard Count Lutens is currently promoting a business related to it.’

If only the world wasn’t ending, I would have jumped into that promising business as well.

During our conversation, Eden gave me a puzzled look and then glanced at the other police officers. He whispered quietly to me.

“That was when you were accepted as Cherry Sinclair.”

Ah, that’s right. I didn’t know that. But even so, I still needed to use the phone.

“Aren’t I Cherry Sinclair now?”

I whispered back to him, leaving Eden speechless, as he stared at me.

I knew I was causing trouble, but I was in a hurry. I had to find out when Harrison would arrive in Brunel.

“It’s fine, Sir Eden. People from the village often come here to borrow the phone.”

The highest-ranking officer, who seemed to be in charge, tried to calm Eden down.

After hearing that, Eden shrugged and moved aside, offering me the phone. It was a quick acceptance, quite different from how he usually stuck to his principles and lacked flexibility.

“The Inspector has given permission, you may use it.”

Ah, that person is the Inspector.

Eden obeyed the Inspector’s words curtly, and the Inspector looked at Eden.

So, was Eden’s rank about Inspector?

‘Yes. That’s it. The president’s son, who starts as an intern.’

Even if Eden didn’t hold a high position, he was still a Lancaster. Even though his father disapproved of him becoming a police officer, Eden’s status as the son of the Duke was quite well-known.

Perhaps the Marquess of Lancaster believed that Eden would eventually leave the police force and inherit his title.

‘But why did Eden become a police officer?’

The novel hadn’t mentioned that before.

Anyway, after thanking them, I made a call to Harrison Howard.

Rrrrr-

Thunk.

[This is Harrison Howard.]

“Harrison! I finally got through to you.”

[Miss?]

“What’s going on? I was curious about when you’d arrive in Brunel, so I called.”

[Oh, it took some time due to the acquisition of the requested items. I’ll depart in four days.]

“Four more days?”

I replied with a slightly disappointed tone. Then I heard Harrison’s laughter from the other end of the line.

[Please wait a bit longer. I’ll be inspecting the mansion to see how you’ve decorated it.]

“An inspection? Am I a child?”

[In my eyes, you were still running away and crossing the ocean on a yacht…]

“Harrison!”

[Hahaha-]

This time, Harrison laughed loudly. He had been laughing for a while over the phone, but suddenly stopped and asked me.

[And what about the 100 million gold credit loan?]

“Well, you see, Harrison, it’s just…-“

[That can wait. You can explain it to me when I get to Brunel.]

Harrison cut me off, not letting me explain further. Damn, he’s already scary.

‘But maybe it’s a good thing. He’ll know why I took the 100 million gold loan soon enough.’

Harrison then continued with his next subject.

[And about the person you mentioned, it’s very difficult for me to handle. Touching that side is risky.]

Harrison didn’t mention a name, but I understood that he was talking about Eden.

It seemed like a response to my previous question about whether there was any way to send Eden back to the capital.

“I thought so. I expected it.”

[I’ll be careful, though, because of this, I’m ready to go to Brunel.]

“Yes, Harrison. Take care.”

[By the way, did the weapons expert I sent arrive yet? The teacher who will teach you how to use weapons.]

“Oh? Well, I haven’t had anyone come looking for me.”

I had completely forgotten about it. Yes, I said I would attach a teacher, but maybe it’s better if they don’t come before the world ends.

At that moment, I heard a frustrated muttering from Harrison through the phone.

[That damn kid…]

“What did you say?”

[Oh, nothing. Take care, Miss. I’ll see you soon.]

“You too, Harrison. Take care of yourself and eat well.”

[Yes. Goodbye.]

Thunk.

Tutututu-

I put down the receiver and turned back with a relieved expression. At least I managed to talk to Harrison.

Then I noticed Eden standing with his arms crossed nearby.

“Harrison Howard?”

“Do you know our lawyer?”

“No one in the capital doesn’t know Mr. Howard.”

“Well, I guess so. Harrison is quite talented.”

“Is he coming to Brunel? Why?”

I narrowed my eyes at Eden’s consecutive questions.

“Why are you curious about that?”

“Is it wrong to be curious?”

“It’s my private matter.”

My response left Eden without anything else to ask. I greeted him with a smile and left the police station.

* * *

In the capital, at the Duke of Lancaster townhouse.

“How can you not give me your name?”

Aurora rolled around on the bed.

During the 61st Notium Street Incident, her savior was definitely a woman. She heard her voice.

The problem was that she couldn’t find any information about her.

“I’m sure she’s an amazing older sister.”

Aurora pondered over her savior for a long time. Just in time, her maid was coming into the room.

“Where the hell is my brother?”

“I heard that he have been assigned to the Brunel Police Station.”

Aurora jumped out of bed.

However, when she thought about it, it seemed that he wasn’t showing up anywhere these days.

Of course, since becoming a police officer, he mostly stayed in the police dormitory, so she rarely saw his face.

“Brunel? Where is it?”

“It’s close to Benton, but I’ve never heard of it.”

Brunel? It’s really the first time I’ve heard it. Aurora tilted her head and sighed.

“Anyway, I can’t figure out what my brother is doing.”

Ever since she was adopted into the Lancaster family, Eden had always been like that. It was impossible to know what he was thinking and doing.

Even if she thought he was overprotective, once he was focused on something, he never looked back.

‘He wasn’t like that before.’

Since Aurora was adopted, Eden changed. She didn’t know the exact reason, but she always felt guilty about it.

“Should I go to Brunel?”

She would go there and observe her brother from afar.

However, when she was about to buy a ticket to Brunel, the Duke of Lancaster came to her.

“I heard that your brother was transferred to Brunel Police Station.”

While they were having tea together in the Duke of Lancaster’s office, he asked Aurora.

The Duke studied her expression carefully. Her adoptive father was always like that, strangely observing her. Even more so than his own son, Eden.

Aurora put down the teacup she was holding and nodded obediently.

“Yes, I heard about it.”

“That rascal suddenly started rebelling, do you know the reason? Wasn’t he fond of you?”

“What? Wasn’t my brother always in a rebellious state? You, father, worry about your son so much, it’s not like you at all.”

Aurora asked her adoptive father innocently.
