Chapter 40

Actually, being compared to the Duke of Lancaster by the incompetent Cherry Sinclair is probably a compliment. Where the hell are we supposed to be the same?

“Cherry Sinclair is bound to be distrusted, and besides, I’ve seen it. Jose Cambron, an illegal weapons expert from the Kingdom of Briarwood, in covert contact with Harrison Howard.”

“…….”

I suddenly understood why Ethan had come all the way down to Brunel, why he’d been watching me so carefully.

There was no physical evidence, but there was a very obvious suspicion.

‘Wait, Jose, did he say Jose now?’

Not the Jose I know, right? Jose Cambron, the sub who was supposed to be at Aurora’s side.

‘Well, his contact with Harrison was before the destruction, so he should be by Aurora’s side now.’

Of course, we’re still a long way off from Jose’s meeting with Aurora.

There was nothing to say anyway, so I fell silent.

“Besides, wasn’t it just last month that the Sinclair family was in the middle of an unfair contract issue, and it’s no secret that the social club that Miss Cherry ran was a betting and gambling club.”

Nothing to say on this one either. Shit.

“I’m reflecting on it…….”

I replied in a small voice.

“I honestly don’t know why you built this weird mansion, or why Miss Cherry knocked me out and kidnapped me here, and I don’t know what the hell you’re doing here, and it’s all very suspicious…….”

Ethan finished with a tone that said he didn’t care if I reflected or not.

“If Miss Cherry hadn’t saved me, I’d be one of those monsters walking the streets right now, that’s for sure.”

That’s true, of course, though Ethan is a man who never deserved that ending.

To put it bluntly, with the exception of the scientist Knox, the main characters of the original film are frankly unnecessary. As long as Ethan is alive, we can develop a cure for disease.

“What good is the past when things are like this anyway? Even if you actually committed a crime, I doubt there’s even an institution left to punish you for it.”

But what Ethan said next caught me off guard.

I was expecting him to continue to question and berate me, but instead he was indicating that he wasn’t going to pursue me any further.

“I told you, Miss Cherry. I’m paying you back….”

“…that was a lousy excuse, but I’ll let it slide. That’s not what I need right now…”

“…not that I believe it is. There’s too many shady corners, even if I could overlook the 61 Nottingham Street case, and I’m not exactly trusting you.”

Ah. That’s why you said that earlier. I was wondering why he said he’d let it slide, which is so unlike him…….

“But even if there’s no way for me to pursue Miss Cherry, it doesn’t make what’s been going on any less true, does it?”

“…….”

“Faith and trust are worth more than a life, so just because your life was spared is no reason for me to trust you.”

“…….”

When Ethan was serious, he was deadly serious.

Look at this. How is this guy not a good cop?

I want to paraphrase what Ethan had said earlier, “I’m not very conscientious, Miss Cherry, and I think you’re misunderstanding me, but I’m not a very good cop.

He was good and righteous, as far as I could see, just hidden by his bad language and demeanour. I don’t know how others saw him, but at least I did.

When he said that faith and trust were worth more than life, it struck a chord with me.

I felt like I could trust a man like that with my life in this harsh world.

I wanted to feel what it was like to have his faith and trust in me when no one but the main characters could guarantee their lives.

‘But it’s still just Aurora.’

As far as I knew, in the novel and now, Aurora was the one he cared about the most.

“But don’t forget this: Sir Ethan. you are alive today because of me.”

I said, as if brainwashing him.

It might be a bit much since I had just kidnapped him, but I figured that brainwashing him would save my life later.

“I will repay you.”

“No, I didn’t really mean to repay me, just say thank you.”

“I will repay you, Miss Cherry. I hope we don’t leave any debts between us.”

Ethan stared at me firmly, unwilling to back down an inch. I shut my mouth for a moment and turned to face him.

A short silence passed between us.

I honestly didn’t need anything in return. But his words, as he put it, drew a line in the sand between us. It meant that he didn’t want to be indebted to me.

But there was only one thing I truly wanted from him in return. A cure.

“Then, I want you to survive. No matter what, survive somehow. Don’t think about anyone else, just live, and that’s okay, because you’re worth it.”

Whatever. Antibody holders to the virus are precious, and Ethan couldn’t give me what I wanted right now anyway.

So I shrugged my shoulders and replied insincerely. I should probably stop talking about this now.

But Ethan’s blue eyes widened as he took in my words. Soon, they wiggled slightly.

Seeing the change, I realised why Ethan had become so uncharacteristically talkative, telling me things about himself that he had never told anyone before.

He must have been anxious. I wondered if we were really alone in the world.

‘So he’s human, too.’

I looked up at the sun high in the sky, thinking about that silly thought.

As I talked to Ethan, my surroundings brightened. It made the devastation around us more apparent.

The bloodstained village was hopeless and horrifying. But there was no time to cower in fear.

Now it was our turn to move.

Aurora crouched in the salon of the social club, shaking with fear.

Most of the nobles in the salon were in the same state of panic as she was.

‘I should have run home right then and there,’ she thought.

The day the disaster happened.

Boom!

The monster that had blown down the Blueway Street sign had devoured five people before Aurora’s eyes.

She witnessed the infection process right before her eyes, watching as their bodies became twisted and misshapen, their guts spilled out onto the floor.

The speed at which the monsters’ heads were spreading was frightening, and she couldn’t remember how she made it back to the salon from that hellish scene.

I can only recall frantically running back up the stairs I had barely descended to escape the maddening creatures and enter the salon.

Some of the nobles in the salon that day fled, while others were too cowardly to venture outside.

‘I wonder if I can go home.’

Aurora firmly believed that the imperial family and the police would do something, and not just her, but all the nobles in the salon.

“It’s been two days already, and we’re running out of food…….”

A young lady muttered as she looked at the dessert table that had been set aside as an emergency food supply.

It was a social gathering, so thankfully there were plenty of desserts and drinks.

But dessert was just dessert. There wasn’t enough to feed a dozen nobles.

‘It would have been different if my brother had been with me.’

To her, Ethan was a trustworthy brother who could do anything.

He’s not interested in the sophistication and refinement of the nobility, but he’s willing to do the dirtiest jobs to achieve his goals.

And so, Aurora thought, if there was anyone she needed right now, it was Ethan.

Even aside from that reason, she missed him, the Duke and Duchess of Lancaster.

“We shouldn’t have been in the capital, we should have gone down to the country house…….”

“It’s not like this in other places, is it? I should have gone down to the estate.”

Seymour and Cotton muttered as they crouched on the floor, trembling with fear.

Into their line of sight came a newspaper lying on the ground.

[Exclusive Report! Cherry Sinclair, the reason you’ve been in hiding until now is because you’re the heir to House Lancaster!?]

[Cherry Sinclair, Ethan Duncan Lancaster and the countryside in a secret rendezvous……!? “Egrets and crows, an unlikely pairing” socialites in shock……!]

[Cherry Sinclair blasts Brunel village for its charms……! Discovering a new holiday destination?!!]

After scanning the headlines for a moment, Cotton said.

“For once, I’m envious of Cherry Sinclair. I don’t know where Brunel is, but if it’s in the middle of nowhere, I’m sure she’ll be fine.”

Cotton’s remark was quickly followed by a question from someone else.

“I wonder if Lady Sinclair knew, and went down there knowing this would happen.”
