Ethan and I climbed down from the roof and stood at the front door of Happy House, each carrying an empty bag. Ethan nodded at me.

“Let’s go.”

As soon as I stepped out of the doors of the Happy House, I saw a huge figure running down the hill.

Ethan quickly steps in front of me and draws his sword. We had decided to refrain from firing because of the noise.

A swish.

A cloak fluttered in my vision, and in a flash, Ethan was gone. He was now in front of the virus monster, and he swung his sharp sword high.

Chaahh!

The creature couldn’t even scream and fell to the ground.

‘Wow. I’m not the main character after all.’

Technically, Ethan was the big brother of the heroine.

I checked the unbroken lantern I’d stashed in my bag and made my way over to Ethan. I’d brought the lantern in case the sun went down while we were looking for Knox.

The world is set in early 19th-century Europe, so there were a lot of things I was missing, including a flashlight.

Ethan wiped the green slime off the blade with a handkerchief.

“We’d better go get some more kerosene, too, and alcohol.”

A flashlight only needed batteries, but a kerosene lantern needed kerosene and alcohol to warm it up.

Oh well. You need kerosene to make a torch, if not a lantern. I had some on the ready before the apocalypse, but I thought it would be a good idea to grab as much as I could while I could.

Whatever it is, I need to maximize my supplies as much as possible.

I sighed and walked past Ethan. Ethan walked down after me. Down the hill, I could just make out the tiniest glimpse of the town of Brunel.

At first glance, the town was quiet. It was hard to believe there had been any chaos earlier. It was so quiet it was almost spooky.

“Where are all the monsters?”

I swallowed hard and walked nervously down the street, scanning the town.

” Stay behind me.”

Ethan said impatiently, crossing in front of me. I nodded and stepped back. Then I gripped my axe and walked after him, still nervous.

After a few more minutes of winding downhill, we were finally at the edge of the village of Brunel.

The polished stone floor was covered in blood.

It was a warm, sunny afternoon, but everything in sight was stained with blood.

I looked toward the clock tower, trying to erase the horror from my mind. Neither the clock tower nor the police station were far from here.

Knox must be saved. A doctor is a rare commodity in this destroyed world.

“Sir Ethan. I believe that if Mr. Knox is not in the clock tower, but somewhere in town, we should look a little further. He is a doctor.”

I don’t know how Ethan took the meaning of my emphasized ‘doctor’; he stared at my face for a long moment, then asked me.

“I want to save Knox, too. But, Miss Cherry, what if……. outside of the village of Brunel is unharmed? Then I think we should make it a higher priority to call for reinforcements as soon as possible.”

“No, Sir Ethan. Wait.”

The situation outside the village of Brunel is the same.

Judging by the way Ethan was reacting now, if he had to choose between Knox and the phone, he wouldn’t hesitate to pick up the phone.

“Maybe there’s no one in the capital to answer the phone anyway……!

I swallowed what I wanted to say.

Ouch.

As I was trying to think of a way to convince Ethan, I suddenly felt a hand on my back. I whipped my head around and swung my axe in annoyance.

“Oh, get a grip!”

Puck.

Quack-!

I felt a dull impact from the axe, but I didn’t care and stuck my head in Ethan’s direction.

Ethan’s panicked face peered over my shoulder.

“Aaaahhhh!”

A scream echoed from somewhere.

And apparently we weren’t the only ones who heard it.

Grunt? Grunt!

Kaaaah!

Crunch!

The creepy howls of the monsters pierced the air in the quiet town, sending shivers of tension and excitement down my spine.

“Shouldn’t we be going? What if Mr. Knox been spotted!”

“Damn it.”

Ethan whips out his longsword and starts slashing. I clutched my axe tightly in my hand and ran after Ethan.

The screams were coming from the direction of the infirmary. It had to be Knox.

As we ran toward the clinic, I saw monsters on the next block running at the same speed as us. As expected, they had a lot of heads.

“Wait.”

Ethan stopped in front of an alleyway, blocking my path. Just then, the clouds parted and bright sunlight poured in, making my vision brighter than before.

Viral monsters of all shapes and sizes were clustered in front of a building. As expected, it was in front of a medical center.

“Do you think there are people inside?”

“Even if there are, I don’t know if they’re still alive.”

As Ethan spoke, some of the monsters had already broken into the clinic, and Ethan watched the scene unfold.

“I think it’s too late to save them.”

Ethan was right. It was too late to save them. The screams from a moment ago were no longer audible.

I bit down hard on my bottom lip.

“Let’s head to the clock tower for now.”

A glance at the infirmary already showed that it was in shambles, and the swarming monsters made it difficult to even approach. It seemed virtually impossible to see inside.

Ethan stared at me, his face expressionless, then put a hand on my shoulder.

“Don’t get away from me.”

I nodded meekly and grabbed the axe. I’m strong, but that’s all I have. I wouldn’t be able to keep up with Ethan, the cop, with my fighting strength.

“I’ll cover the back.”

Ethan looked back and forth between me and the axe in my hand, then smirked.

“Ms. Cherry and that axe, they really don’t go together, you know that?”

Then he laughs again.

What? You laugh? You’re laughing at this serious situation?

Ethan’s laughter seemed uncharacteristically relaxed for the bizarre situation, and maybe that’s why I felt a little relieved to have him by my side.

“I’ll take the back, then.”

With that, Ethan turned and walked away, his hand fixing on the handle of the longsword he was carrying.

We had come in a different direction from our original destination when we heard screams coming from the direction of the infirmary. The clock tower we were aiming for was just outside of town, and we could have just gone directly to it.

Even if you take the back roads to stay out of sight, you’ll still have to cross the main street where those monsters are gathered. The police station was on the other side of the line from the clinic.

I whispered in a low voice behind Ethan’s back as we walked ahead.

“The monsters are quite large, so we might want to stay as low as possible so we don’t get caught in their sights.”

Ethan glanced back at me.

While he was looking back at me, the creature suddenly jumped out in front of us. I shoved him out of the way and swung my axe, sending the creature flying.

Kueh-ek-!

The monster’s screams were accompanied by the sound of a building collapsing.

The monsters that were swarming in front of the medical center stopped moving. At the same time, everyone’s heads turned toward us.

We’re fucked.

I grabbed Ethan’s hand.

“Run!”

After a moment’s hesitation, Ethan squeezed my hand and we started running.

There was no way we were going to make it to the police station through the back streets at this point; the monsters were running toward us with their backs to the alley.

We turned into the alleyway behind the line of police stations and quickly hid behind the back door of the first building we saw.

Ethan went in first and grabbed my wrist from inside. The door slammed shut just as I entered.

Ethan stood with his back against the closed door, watching the scene outside. I leaned against him, burying myself in his chest, and held my breath.

Aaaah!

A monster’s roar sounded not far away. Sweat broke out on my hands.

“If I’d known this was coming, I wouldn’t have used the catapult so loudly.

Ethan leaned his head back, his chest rising and falling with quiet tension. His hot breath on my forehead. My hair felt white with tension.

Doo-doo-doo.

The sound of irregular footsteps came from right in front of him, as if the monsters were moving in a swarm.

It seemed to quiet down a bit after the first flurry of footsteps,

Thud. Thud.

The sound of quiet, heavy footsteps came from the ground.

I swallowed hard and held my breath again.

Ethan’s large hand closed over the back of mine, which was shaking with nerves.
