With a somewhat erratic gait, Ethan strode into the room, very slowly, looking like he was dying to leave.

Stepping up to Knox, Ethan placed the back of his hand on his forehead. Very impatiently, as if he was bothering him.

If you don’t want to do something, you don’t have to do it, but Ethan wouldn’t do that.

He denied it, screaming that he wasn’t righteous, but in Knox’s eyes, he was a perfect cop.

“How long have I been asleep?”

Knox asked, leaning against the window sill. Ethan answered, sitting on the bed.

“All day.”

“Somehow I feel better.”

Knox rubbed the back of his neck and leaned up against the window sill.

Sitting on the bed, Ethan held a water bottle in his hand. He set the upside-down cup down on top of the bottle and poured himself a drink.

“Ms. Cherry asked me to do this, not because I care about you.”

Sounding defensive, Ethan stood up and held out the cup of water. Knox took it without a word.

“I’m just saying, I think I might have been dreaming for a second…….”

“It’s not a dream. There are still monsters out there.”

Knox let out an irritated sigh as Ethan answered without giving him any chance to respond. If only it had been a dream.

He calmly looked around the room, then back out the window. As usual, Happy House was very peaceful.

“This place is like another world…….”

“I lit a torch outside the wall. They don’t seem to like fire, so the area around the mansion should be safe for now.”

Torches outside the walls. I wonder when they installed those.

Then Knox remembered how Cherry had called in a repairman to fix the wall before it was destroyed.

“This mansion……. It looks like it’s ready for the apocalypse.”

“That’s what I was wondering, too.”

“Everything about Miss Cherry is suspicious.”

“But it’s true that you and I are being greatly helped by Miss Cherry.”

Knox agreed with Ethan on that last point. To him, Cherry was a lifesaver. She deserved to be treated like one. And now she had them in her house.

“I think I’ll wait and see how things go, then head to the capital.”

At Ethan’s words, Knox looked at him puzzled, then understood.

“Because of the Lancaster loyalty?”

Ethan nodded in the affirmative.

Knox ran a dry hand down his face. Then he closed his mouth, looking thoughtful.

Ethan didn’t wait for a response from Knox, but instead gathered up the buckets and cups.

The behavior was so natural that Knox almost joked that he’d gotten a job as a butler at Cherry Sinclair’s Happy House.

‘If I say that, I would have been hit in the face with a cup of water.’

Knox shook his head, then replied.

“I’ll stay here for now, I owe her my life.”

Ethan looked at him as he picked up the bucket of water. Knox kept his gaze fixed on Cherry outside the window.

“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to stay with Ms. Cherry until she gets tired of this place.”

“Whatever.”

Ethan looked like he didn’t care if Knox did or not, which surprised Knox. They were pretty close, weren’t they?

“But how are you going to get out? It’s in front of the mansion, it’s Brunel, and it looks like it’s going to be hard to get through.”

“They’re on a rampage right now, and maybe after a while they’ll calm down, but I’d wait until then before making a move.”

That means Ethan will have to stay at Happy House for a few more days. Truth be told, there was no telling when exactly they would quiet down.

Knox leaned his arms lazily on the window sill and watched Cherry. Cherry was now lying casually on the ground in the garden next to the vegetable garden, looking up at the sky. He doesn’t know what the hell is going on in that little head of hers.

The side of her face looked very blank as she stared up at the sky in wonder. She looked like she was struggling, like she was holding on to something, like she could disappear at any moment.

It’s like she’s in another world, even though she’s in the same room.

“Is Ms. Cherry okay?”

Knox asked bluntly.

Knox knew she wasn’t injured; his question was about her state of mind.

Even with her extraordinary powers, Cherry was a fine young lady who had never had a real world experience.

Such a young woman would usually be shocked and easily despair in such a situation, and that was the normal reaction.

“She’s just a unique person, but she’s a normal person.”

Ethan said nonchalantly. He sounded like he was defending his puppy. Knox glanced at him and narrowed his eyes.

“No, I’m talking about her mental state. She is a young woman, and no one can be sane in a situation like this.”

Knox himself was not okay, having survived the monster outbreak and surviving alone in Brunel until now. Even he didn’t consider himself sane.

Ethan didn’t count, since he wasn’t sure he’d ever been sane enough to admit it.

Regardless, Ethan agreed with Knox.

“That’s true. If it was Aurora, she’d be crying and freaking out already…….”

But from what he’s seen so far, the Cherry won’t fall as easily as Knox worries.

“Come on, Ludfordshire. You’re a doctor, see if Miss Cherry is okay.”

Knox felt a little defensive at Ethan’s words.

“Psychiatry isn’t my specialty.”

“You say you’re worried about her because she’s a young lady, and then you walk away so quickly? I’ll be honest, I’m not exactly sure about Miss Cherry. Maybe she’s just pretending to be okay.”

Mr. Knox didn’t answer, and then Ethan added another word.

“Take care of our landlady, Doc. Don’t let her fall apart. She’s a lifesaver.”

The words cut deep, and Knox muttered them to himself.

In the midst of all this chaos, it was Cherry who had saved his life and Ethan’s life.

After a moment of reflection, Knox nodded tiredly.

“I’ll keep an eye on it.”

The corners of Ethan’s mouth twitched with satisfaction, and the two men’s gazes settled on Cherry once more.

There was no way she could be in her right mind, they both thought inwardly.

I had been lying in the garden the whole time, and when I saw the sun creeping up, I sat up.

After lying in the garden for a while, I heard a few monsters knocking on the stone gate. I wonder what’s wrong with them.

Most of them stayed away from the manor because I had torches lit outside the walls, but a few kept circling the stone gate.

The gate is a solid, thick stone wall, so it shouldn’t be easy to break through.

They’re not intelligent, so their attack usually doesn’t last long unless there’s food in front of them. However, a few of them have been like that ever since we rescued Knox.

I’m getting a little anxious at this point.

So far, the evacuation to Happy House has been a good idea. But if this keeps up, it’s not “evacuated” anymore, it’s “trapped”.

Just then, Ethan walks up to me.

“What are you doing?”

“Taking a break.”

Ethan looked down at me with an odd expression. He held out his hand to me. I meekly took his hand and pulled myself up.

My ‘gardening look’ was a mess of dirt. My hands were dirty, so Ethan’s quickly became dirty too.

He pulled a handkerchief from his uniform’s inside pocket and wiped my hands, then his own. That looks like the handkerchief he lent me the last time I threw up in the garden. He must have washed it and packed it again. A man who carries a handkerchief, he is better than me.

“What about Knox?”

“I was just about to tell you about him. He’s awake, and I brought him some water like Miss Cherry asked.”

“You gave him clean water, right?”

My question made Ethan pause and look at me. He looked somewhat shocked.

“Do I look like such a trashy human being to you?”

“What? No, it’s not that……. Uh……. Did you really bring him water?”

Ethan looked even more shocked at my rambling. No, I meant that Ethan hated Knox so much that he’d just thrown an axe at him, and that’s why…….

“I didn’t realized how Miss Cherry sees me.”

At a loss for words, I didn’t answer him. I asked him if maybe he would do it, but I wasn’t actually expecting him to do it.

That’s when he got serious and said.

“I’m going to the capital.”
