That’s when he got serious and said.

“I’m going to the capital.”

“I see.”

I replied soullessly, then shook my head.

I had expected this. I had seriously considered whether I should take him to the capital.

If Ethan wanted to go, there was nothing I could do. I mean, for safety reasons, I’ve seen firsthand how strong he is in combat.

He’s got antibodies to the virus, so there’s no point in me trying to convince him that I’m going to protect him.

Besides, Ethan has now seen how dangerous monsters can be.

He knows their weaknesses and what to look out for, so I don’t think I need to worry too much.

“Why are you so easily convinced?”

Ethan asked me in a questioning voice. I stared at him blankly, at a loss for words. What does he want me to do?

Reading my expression, Ethan burst out laughing. Then he took a step closer to me.

I took as many steps back as he did.

One of Ethan’s eyebrows shot up in frustration as he watched me.

He tilted his head to one side impatiently.

“You said you’d protect me.”

I remembered what I’d said on the roof before I’d gone to Brunel.

“Don’t ever think of sacrificing yourself for a phone call that may or may not get through, Sir Ethan, I will protect you.”

Yeah. Yeah. I had said something like that.

“But you’re the one who just said you’re leaving, and I respect your decision.”

Ethan paused, didn’t argue back, just shut up. He even looked unhappy.

“By the way, can we go?”

I continued, pointing to the gate where the monsters were pounding on it.

Ethan was silent as he looked at the gate, which was firmly closed. No matter how much I thought about it, it didn’t seem like an easy way out.

“They must have smelled a human and gathered.”

Ethan muttered. I agreed with him.

“That’s certainly a possibility.”

Honestly, I don’t know exactly why. I don’t know what’s in those monsters’ heads.

With a solid stone gate and wall between us, they can’t even see us inside.

I had originally planned to nurse the fallen Knox and go out into the forest whenever I could to collect more stones for the catapult.

However, I couldn’t go out because they had taken over the gate.

In short, it became difficult to distract them with the catapult.

‘I put the bells on for just such an occasion.’

Yesterday, Ethan and I tried again to distract the creatures by ringing the bell, but this time it didn’t have much of an effect.

‘I should have put out more bells if I’d known this would happen.’

Even though I knew I didn’t have time, I felt a rush of regret.

“Once their numbers are down a bit, we’ll have to figure out a way to get out of here. Until then, do you mind if I stay at the mansion?”

Ethan asked me. I nodded in agreement. Up until then, we had assumed that after a while, the monsters would lose interest and scatter.

Anyway, I finished my conversation with Ethan and looked up at the sky. Dinner time was already coming.

“I guess we should go eat.”

‘Ugh, what a bother. Why do humans need to eat?’

With that primal question in my mind, I grabbed a basket of eggs from by the chicken coop.

Knox had been awake for two days, so I thought I’d make him a meal today.

It’s a bit of a irony, but it’s crucial to our survival to have a proper meal, not just a quick bite to eat to survive. It means keeping your humanity in check.

I realized how important these small details are to maintaining mental health in difficult situations.

The furniture and survival items in the Happy House are all of the highest quality for similar reasons.

As difficult as it was, I wanted to maintain a sense of normalcy in here as much as possible.

There was also the added bonus of the fact that I hadn’t eaten anything but tomato stew in two days, and I didn’t want to look at tomatoes for a while.

“Can I help you with anything?”

Ethan asked as he opened the front door for me. Is it because you’ve announced you’re leaving, and you’re sorry you’re stuck with us for a few more days?

But I casually tossed the basket of eggs I was carrying to Ethan.

“Thanks.”

Ethan graciously takes the basket and follows me out the door.

Arriving in the kitchen, I tucked the coals under the stove and lit the burner. I put a skillet on the grate, and when it was hot, I added the bacon.

The grease from the bacon sizzled. I immediately cracked an egg and started frying it.

‘I wanted to try this so bad.’

Crispy bacon and a fried egg. Something out of an animated movie, something that looked so insignificant.

[N: yeah..ik…y’all are thinkin Howl’s Moving Castle]

Knox wandered into the kitchen when he smelled something delicious.

I put a new skillet on the remaining burner and dropped in the butter.

The butter melted slowly in the searing heat, and I cut the bread and toasted it eagerly.

I set up a cutting board on the countertop, cut the cheese into bite-sized pieces, and transferred it to a plate.

I piled the food into bowls and waved to Ethan, who quickly carried the finished product out to the dining hall.

Knox, who had been watching from the sidelines, quickly realized what he had to do and grabbed the utensils to set the table.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, am I good at this?”

Knox asked Ethan in a sarcastic tone. This was immediately followed by a chuckle.

Neither Ethan nor Knox complained, which was surprising.

Nobles are always looking for a treat, even when they’re being helped, because they’re nobles.

During our time together, I often thought teaching them their responsibilities, but I’m glad they doing it without me having to say anything.

I arranged the toasted bread, bacon, and fried eggs nicely on a large plate.

Then I grilled the tomatoes and mushrooms in the same skillet as the bacon. Once they were golden brown, I sprinkled them with ground basil for extra flavor.

I transferred the roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, and a few other veggies to a bowl and set it on the countertop. Ethan and Knox came over and took them.

Meanwhile, I poured water from the watering can. Then I grabbed a bottle of wine from the kitchen pantry.

Knox’s face lit up when he saw the wine.

“So Miss Cherry knows something about gastronomy after all.”

That was usually the reaction at Grayson when anyone brought wine to a meal. Everyone liked to drink.

Ethan didn’t look particularly interested in the wine, but he was grateful when I poured it for him.

I poured myself a glass of wine and took a seat at the head of the banquet table. Ethan sat to my right and Knox to my left.

I don’t know why the seating arrangement is this way. Knox tells me that Ethan made the arrangement.

Knox looks a little overwhelmed when he sees the food on the table. He turned to me with a soft smile on his face.

“I didn’t expect to taste these foods again, but this is amazing, and I certainly didn’t expect to be served by Miss Cherry in this abandoned house.”

“It’s important to have a good meal, you know, so we can forget about the grim situation outside, if only for a moment……. It also reminds us that we’re human beings who take advantages of of civilization.”

At my answer, Knox looked at me with great interest, his chin resting on the back of his clenched hands before he picked up his meal.

“Ms. Cherry, I have a question for you.”

I lifted my fork, looked at Knox, and nodded. As if telling him to go ahead.

“As much as I’m thrilled with the sumptuous meal, I have to admit, I’m puzzled that Miss Cherry is so good at this.”

Knox was sharp. You could almost see the cunning lurking beneath those wide, smiling eyes.

It was easy to be on edge when dealing with him.

“How are you so good at what maids are supposed to do? Come to think of it, you took out a hundred million gold in credit before the fall. Maybe Sinclair’s situation isn’t quite as good as it’s made out to be…….”

“…….”

I can’t believe the conclusion after all that speculation and assumption is a complete wrong answer.

I take back the word sharp.
