Chapter 117 – Crocodile Jump (1)

Tonight, Su Jinqing had been distracted because she was thinking of something in her heart. Despite the beautiful scenery in front of her eyes, she wasn’t in the mood to admire it. She almost depended entirely on her instinct to recite her script.

Thankfully, the tourists didn’t detect her irregularity. Their attention was all attracted by the Henan River.

“Next, my partner will bring the dangerous and exciting ‘crocodile jump’ for everyone. Everyone, please stay away from the guardrail and don’t lean forward while taking pictures. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Su Jinqing turned off her mic and then quietly left her spot.

On cue, Lin walked out. In order to walk around conveniently on the wetland, he only wore a camouflage uniform. He casually tied the coat around his waist. It was hot outside, so he rolled up his sleeves, sweat dripped down from his biceps. Quickly, he was toasted under the sun.

While carrying a bucket of fresh meat in one hand, he held the long and slender spiky bamboo in the other. Different from the gentle Su Jinqing, he tightly pursed his lips and had a cold expression, rejecting everyone’s advances.

He was no expert in communicating with the tourists. In the employee handbook, he was to “smile at his tourists,” but he never obeyed the rules.

What was strange was that he never received any complaints. Su Jinqing and Edwin had talked about this before and they both thought that maybe in the tourists’ hearts, this bloody and scary activity like the ‘crocodile jump’ must be carried out by a cold and sturdy man.

Lin stood at the helm of the ship. First, he confirmed which area had more crocodiles. After, he grabbed a huge piece of dripping bloody meat from the bucket and inserted it on the sharp edge of the bamboo just like hanging the fish bait on the fish hook. However, the fish hook was curved while the sharp bamboo was straight.

Once he had prepared everything, he dropped the bamboo into the water. Because the length of the bamboo was limited, the fresh meat hung above the water surface and there was still a meter before touching the water.

The captain had already stopped the engine and the flat ship floated quietly on the water. From afar, they could hear a few wading birds shrieking.

The dark blood of the fresh meat dripped into the water surface and quickly blended in, vanishing without a trace.

“Are there really crocodiles down there?” A tourist suddenly asked. “It looks pretty safe…”

Bang!

They heard a loud bang and a huge crocodile about four meters long broke through the water. The long tail slammed against the water and the body flew mid-air, biting on the dripping fresh meat!

Although it was huge, it was agile. Before the tourists could react, a flicker of green and black suddenly barged into their gazes. Then, under gravity, it returned into the water with a loud bang and stirred up a huge wave.

The tourists in the front row were soaked, but not a single person paid attention to these details.

The “crocodile jump” was the most dangerous, yet left the deepest impression for the people visiting the Henan River.

The tourists gasped loudly, but Lin wasn’t influenced by this at all. He continued to quietly “fish the crocodile”.

Another piece of fresh meat was inserted on the bamboo and tossed into the water. The greedy and violent crocodiles jumped out of the water again and opened their bloody mouths, swallowing the meat in one bite.

The man expressionlessly repeated his actions as though the predators surrounding the boat were just an ordinary pack of wild dogs.

It was not until the last piece of fresh meat was fed that the expert predators took leave, albeit unsatisfied. Yet, there were other “huge animals” that didn’t leave far. Instead, they submerged under the water and only peeked their noses and eyes out of the water. They stared intensely in the direction of the boat with narrow eyes, sending shivers down the people’s spine.

To them, the fat pieces of fresh meat were just appetizers. The “two feet monsters” that disturbed them while driving the boat every day were their actual “meal.”

What a pity…

The boat started to cruise again and the captain pulled the horn. The boat that was driven by the two feet monsters broke through the water and gradually left the area where the crocodiles gathered together.
Standing at the helm, Lin’s gaze landed on the greedy wild beasts. He gradually knitted his eyebrows tightly.

……

The boat stopped at the shore and the tourists walked down the deck, trembling and in fear.

It was not until they had stepped on the sturdy ground and confirmed that no crocodiles would appear under their feet, did everyone sigh in unison. It felt as though they’d just recovered from the life or death situation.

“Who knew that the crocodiles were that agile?! Look at my shoes quickly. There is a lake scent.”

“God, this is the real ‘crocodile jump!’ Did you see how they leaped out of the water? It was like a dinosaur had crawled out!”

“Mommy, the crocodiles are much bigger than the ones in the zoo. I want to see them again next time!”

The tourists started discussing the amazing scene that they’d just witnessed in enthusiasm. There were even some who eagerly walked towards the dock’s gift shop, wanting to buy some legal crocodile-skin wallets and such. They wanted to bring it back to their relatives and friends. There were some who were brave enough and wanted to go to the restaurant that provided crocodile meat for the tourists to try out.

After Su Jinqing confirmed that the last tourist had left the ship, she left with the crowd.

Yet before she walked two steps, she was called to a stop by the familiar Chinese language.

“Hi, Leader Su, are you Chinese?”

The people that called her were the family that just got off the boat. The young woman seemed to be in her early thirties. She easily shifted between Chinese and English.

“It’s really unlike to see Asians in the Northern Territory. I feel close to you guys. Can I take a picture with you guys?”

As she said this, the head of the family raised his camera. Meanwhile, the child who seemed to only be six or seven max, was happily carrying their crocodile stuffed animal, walking shyly to Su Jinqing.

Su Jinqing had been the temporary tour guide for a week or so. This was the first time a tourist had asked to take pictures with her. Even more, a tourist that spoke Chinese! She knew very well how well-known the name “Su Jin” was, domestically. Although these Asians didn’t recognize her, if they uploaded a picture of them together on social media, maybe…

“Sister, Sister! I really like crocodiles. When I grow up, I want to be like you. I want to drive the boat carrying many passengers and look at the crocodiles on the Henan River!” The child looked adorable and cute as he spoke.

Su Jinqing lowered her head to look at the little boy, only to see him looking at her with awe and respect. The sparkling gaze made her think of her fans who waited all night in line at the airport just to see her.

She couldn’t bear to reject the child’s request, but she couldn’t take pictures with him…

While stuck in this dilemma, Lin who’d left early on, suddenly turned around and walked towards them.

The man who never said anything in front of the tourists before suddenly said, “… It’s inconvenient for Tour Guide Su to take pictures, but I can.”

He was still holding the bamboo and the bucket used to hold the fresh meat. His clothes were wet from the splashes, and there was a strong scent of blood on his hands.

If he walked on the road like this, someone probably would’ve thought he was a cold-blooded murderer. Yet, in the child’s eyes, who’d just seen the crocodile jump performance, this uncle was an amazing hero!
