Chapter 90 – An Intern’s Struggle

After working overtime for three days in a row, the editorial department of True Self magazine was filled with exhaustion.

Shu Shu, an intern editor, hit her head against her desk as she closed her eyes for a nap. Several extra-large coffee take-out cups were stood at random on the corner of her desk. The coffee powder settled at the bottom of the cups showing a murky brown color.

For days, coffee had been her constant companion.

On her desktop shows all kinds of data stacked together, almost drowning Shu Shu just at its mere sight.

The “True Self” magazine issues monthly. Every week before its publication, the editorial department is filled with sorrows; people are turning upside down. The editors are all on the verge of losing their sanity. To meet deadlines, some editors sleep in the company and drink coffee three times a day.

This issue of the magazine they were ushered with a new challenge–Su Jin’s first solo cover theme was theirs to design!

The actress would break the tradition and showcase a new version of herself.

For this new cover project, the entire editorial department has been mobilized. Interns like Shu Shu are not qualified to participate in the cover meeting, but brainstorming naturally means the more people, the better.

At the end of several meetings, Shu Shu had a hard time catching up on her sleep. Laying her head on her desk, she still couldn’t fall asleep. Her brain refused to relax, the voices of her co-workers rang clearly in her head.

There were so many things on her desk, forming a steep mountain and blocking her sleeping figure from everyone’s sight.

“How did Su Jin suddenly become so daring? She didn’t want to wear bathing suits in films before, why did she suddenly agree to this project?” An editor asked.

“Who knows?” Another person replied, “but I heard that she strongly requested it and said she wanted to change her image for good.”

“Also, now, embodying a “pure flower” image is not a good idea anymore. Did you see the new talent called “Little Su Jin”? There’s also this model competition early this year wherein one innocent-looking model is called “Little Su Jin”. There are already so many “Little Su Jin” in the entertainment circle. If she doesn’t make a transition, would she have to be called “Old Su Jin” in the future?”

This was followed by a ruckus of laughter. Fashion editors are the most well-informed gossipmongers, and the stars’ scandals are their favorite past time.

“By the way, which of the three proposed themes of the cover did she choose?”

“It is not clear yet.” The first editor shook his head. “I guess it’s the mermaid one. It’s pure and lovely. Even the bikini is partially covered by the shell. It doesn’t show much skin.”

“I think the elf-woman theme is also perfect! Which girl doesn’t like to be an elf-woman with sharp ears and magical aura?” said a woman with an annoying high-pitched voice.

“As for the third theme, I think she would be horrified to see it! “Lady Godiva on horseback”? The person sarcastically said. “How dare Shu Shu give this kind of idea?”

Shu Shu’s eyes opened instantly at the mention of her name.

“Interns are not afraid of offending people.”

In their perspective, people such as Shushu, a young college student, should do more, speak less, and make minutes of the meeting obediently.

“Why should she be in the limelight and bring up any unrealistic ideas?” They couldn’t understand what came to the chief editor’s mind, for he actually passed Shu Shu’s suggestion with the other two decent themes.

“Su Jin will be surely offended!”

As they talked and laughed like hyenas, they did not know that their sarcastic and belittling remarks were all heard by the party involved.

Behind the mountain of papers, Shu Shu plunged her head deeper into her arms and hid her red eyes.

She knew that new recruits are always the lowest level of existence in the editorial department. Interns like her are like flowing water, but she had never expected herself to make a splash. But in her heart, she still had a little expectation that her hard work could be appreciated.

Yet, after all, she was too young, thin-skinned, and lacked confidence. Faced with the taunts of the two predecessors in the office, she didn’t have the courage to stand up and confront them face to face.

Why am I so useless?

Shu Shu couldn’t wait to shrink herself into a ball, roll away and just disappear.

Just then, the door of the editorial department was suddenly opened. The assistant editor-in-chief of the clothing department hurried in, his eyes, which looked unreal with his purple eyeshadow and blue contact lens, swept over everyone’s head.

After not finding the person he was looking for, he raised his voice.

“Where is Shu Shu?! Where is she?!”

The two editors who were initially gossiping suddenly stopped.

Even though she was reluctant, Shu Shu had no choice but to stand up from behind her desk with a pair of red and swollen eyes.

The assistant editor-in-chief saw her distraught appearance. “Why do you look like sh*t?” Instead of answering, Shu Shu only bowed her head in embarrassment.

“Forget it! There is no time for this nonsense. You have to wash your face and do your make up quickly! Don’t forget to take your notebook to the conference room in five minutes.”

Shu Shu was at a loss.” Do you want me to take minutes of the meeting?”

“What meeting minutes are there to make?!” The assistant editor-in-chief exclaimed. “Su Jin and her team arrived. Before the official shooting, she requested to meet the person who did the planning in person.”

“Ah?” Shu Shu’s brain took longer to process the information.

“Don’t ah, what haven’t you understood? Su Jin chose the third theme proposal, “Lady Godiva on Horseback,” that you made!”
