Chapter 7 Grief

"Mr. Yifu..." Nange could not help murmuring out. How could I say that? Thinking of the good friend who died in his arms, Nange was very sad and unsure of what to say to him.

Yifu raised his head, smiled, and held his glass of beer in front of Nange, the latter took the glass of beer in her hands and took a big gulp. Wow! It was a strange taste, bitter, astringent, and tingling to the tongue, and with the heat in his stomach, a little stupefied. Nange would like to spit out, but to see Mr. Yifu sips the beer slowly, savoring every drop. It’s really hard to understand how could he drank it down. Grown men have to pay for it? It's a bizarre idea.

"I thought wine was better than milk; If I knew it was, I might as well take a glass of milk.” That being said, Nange kept pouring beer into his mouth. He took a few gulps to get used to the unfamiliar taste.

“Mr. Yifu, Do you know what man lives for?”

Nange was a little bit drunk.

Mr. Yifu frowned slightly and looked at him without speaking.

Nange sighed and said, "a good man, who was talking and laughing yesterday, is dead today. Human is such a fragile animal.

Mr.Yifu sighed as well and said. "If you go out into the war-torn world and to see the old and the young who live in the shadow of death, you will truly appreciate the value of life. Don't you want to do to be a good hunter? Just go ahead and help those who deserve it. In this world, to measure the value of one's existence is to see how many paths he has traveled, how many worlds he has seen, how many good deeds he has done. Do you get it?”

“Yes I do.” Nange answered.

"My son also wanted to be a hunter. Said Mr. Yifu. “Why aren't you with him today, boy?"

"Mr. Yifu," he said slowly. "I brought back Suoying, but... It is...... Corpse!"

“What?” Mr. Yifu jumped up in surprise.

"My father sent him to uncle Minch’s…” "

Before he had completed his words, Mr. Yifu rushed out and let the beer glass drop on the floor. Nange followed him to the northeast of the town, where there was a great courtyard where Dr. Minch lived.

When they arrived at Dr. Minch's house, uncle Pumpkin and another middle-aged man arrived with a stretcher. Looking at the pale face on the stretcher, Mr. Yifu gave a miserable cry, leaned over to retrieve his son's body, kicked open the door, and rushed in.

Dr. Minch's laboratory, deep in the courtyard, Suoying’s body was put on a platform. Dr. Minch was holding the electric shock machine to stimulate the heart of the body again and again. The forehead has exuded dense beads of sweat.

"It’s Too late, Mr. Yifu." "The heart stopped too long," Dr. Minch said disappointingly. "The lack of oxygen caused the child to be completely brain-dead, and there was nothing I could do."Mr. Yifu looks pale. He picked up his son’s body and walked to the door. He tried to comfort his uncle, but he was momentarily unable to say the words.

Nange and his father came home.

"Go to bed early "Father’s expression looked strange. ”Don't think so much."

How could Nange fall asleep! Tossing and turning in bed, his mind was filled with weird visions of the big hole he had seen. Not knowing how long it would be, a siren sounded over the town. Then he heard his father tapping on the door.

"What's the matter, dad?

"Take your arms, my son. We have a circumstance!"

Nange followed his father to the second-floor balcony, and he was carrying out AK47, which is father handed to him after he had left Dr. Minch's house.

Nange still remembered his father's anguished expression when Mr. Yifu held his son in his arms. Father did not say a word when he handed his rifle and magazine to Nange, but he had a real sense of growing up. In the midst of the chaos, the town of Rado adhered to a tradition that anyone over eighteen should be permitted to own guns and leave town because there was so much danger outside. But it is this tradition that has created countless wannabes, such as Nange, eager to get out of town and into the world, and that has also led to a growing number of middle-age drinks in the pub in Rado.

As the best mechanic in the town of Rado, uncle Pumpkin seems to be the only adult man in town who won’t spill a drop, just because Nange is still at home.

In the future…who will care in the future?
