Chapter 104

* * *

It must be because of the lack of sleep, but Reina felt a migraine coming on—a sharp pain stabbed down from her left eye to the back of her head. The numb and unpleasant sensation made her shut her eyes tightly.

Then, a familiar voice came from the right.

“Reina, try eating this too, hm?”

Soon after, two other voices rang in her ear as though in competition.

“Noona, eat this instead of that.”

“Reina, you might just get ugly with that. Eat this.”

As accompanied by their hectic lines, they pushed forth some refreshments for her to taste.

After the incident at the ball, Ethan, Eli and Paul started visiting the Chantra residence whenever they had time. Luke and Letis also sometimes visited, but compared to these three, their visits felt like annual events instead.

Looking calmly at the desserts on the table of the garden’s pavilion—a lemon macaron, a mille-feuille with strawberries, and a glazed chocolate éclair—Reina smoothed her lips once with the tip of her tongue.

“Deputy Director, aren’t you busy?”

“……”

“Paul, aren’t you supposed to be attending class at the academy right now?”

“……”

“And Eli, you said you had to go back to your family’s estate today for your mentorship.”

“……”

They were looking at her as though they were competing with each other, but the moment she said these words to them one by one, all three of them turned away and couldn’t say anything back.

“Everyone must be busy nowadays, but why do you keep visiting?”

“That’s because you can’t eat well without me…”

Seemingly troubled, Paul pouted. Sitting next to him though, Ethan smiled and asked him a question that was not really a question.

“Though you’re a healer, it seems like you can’t cure your own injury?”

Everyone looked at him perplexedly, but Ethan just took a leisurely sip and continued to speak.

“Your mouth has gone crooked, I see. You’ve been talking nonsense for a while now.”

Though it was a pretty flustering thing to hear, Paul remained calm. Rather, he propped his chin on one hand and put on his unique smile.

“Ah, I guess Your Excellency doesn’t know what kind of relationship Reina and I have. If we don’t see each other, we can’t eat well.”

Listening to Paul’s words as he was sitting next to Reina, Eli shook his head and let out a low chuckle.

“Well, I heard that you’re just friends.”

“Yes. ‘Seemingly’ friends who take baths together.”

“Not ‘take’ but ‘used to take’. Besides that, it was a long, long time ago.”

Inevitably, Reina bowed her head slightly and pressed her temples. The argument ensuing in front of her wasn’t even on the level of a fight between kindergarteners.

‘…Ha. My head’s ringing.’

Did all three of them hide gold underneath the Chantra family’s townhouse or something? Her chest was already feeling so suffocated because of Lehman, but now even her head was throbbing because they came here every single day only to get into scuffles.

“Huh? Noona, you don’t look so good.”

“…Mmh. I’m a bit tired.”

Because of you guys.

“Really? Then let’s get you back to your room, Noona. If you’re too exhausted, would you like me to carry you on my back? I went to your room last time, so I know where it is.”

Eli specifically emphasized that he had been in Reina’s room before. However, Paul smiled as if this was nothing.

“I think I’d be a better guide since we slept in that room together before. Right, Reina?”

“You keep mentioning the things you’ve done together under the age of eighteen as if you still do it.”

“Shall I help you go back, Noona?”

“Don’t bother. Reina, walking would just hurt your legs. Let me teleport you there.”

Under normal circumstances, she would have found all their fussing as quite adorable.

Well, of course, it was a little strange that Paul had stepped up and had jumped into the race for Reina as well. But he’d been whining about his position as her best friend since last time, so… Reina figured that this might be it.

Still though, right now, the incident with Lehman was just keeping her so blindingly fatigued… All she wanted was for everyone to leave.

‘I want to rest.’

“I’ll bring you there, Reina.”

“How would Your Excellency bring her there when you’ve never been to her room? Noona, I’ll be the one to take you there.”

“Reina, I’m the one who’s been to your room the most, so it’s better for me to be the one to walk you there, right? Right?”

Three different voices rang out in chaos.

Besides that, she was feeling so nauseous when these three people with strong scents kept reaching out to her as though they were competing. Their scents were pleasant separately, but when they’re together in one place like this, the mixture wasn’t good.

“…Everyone, stop.”

“Tch. But those two keep trying to get in between us.”

Paul puffed up his cheeks as much as he could, then he naturally nuzzled up to Reina.

But it’s not like Ethan would just let this happen.

“Good grief. Marquis Bohr must have a lot of worries.”

Ethan spoke casually and—fwip—sharply pulled Paul away, who persistently kept flirting with Reina under the guise of a childhood friend. Then, the sarcasm leaked out.

“The Marquis must be very worried because so much barking keeps coming out of the person who’s supposed to be the next Minister of Health. Certainly, you haven’t actually turned into a mongrel, have you?”

At the rather radical choice of words, Paul let out an indignant scoff. Eli burst into laughter.

“…I didn’t know that Your Excellency has a knack for such vehement vocabulary.”

“If you didn’t know before, then you can start being familiar with it now.”

Watching Ethan and Paul talking to each other as though they were going to go for the kill, Reina swept her fringe up in frustration.

“Stop. Everyone, stop. If you keep fighting like this, I’ll have to ask you all to leave.”

“Yes, Noona. It’s better to kick out all the noisy people. You can just go back to your room with me.”

After what Reina said, Eli quipped and tried to take her pale hand. However, the two fighting men immediately cast a spell at the same time.

“What are you trying to hold just now?”

“Are you crazy, Elijah Jehardt?”

Eli looked down at his abruptly deflected hand, smiling.

“What was I trying to hold, huh. Noona’s hand, of course? And what do you mean, crazy. This is perfectly normal. We do this all the time.”

“Don’t cross the line.”

“Ah, this? But Noona and I have the kind of relationship where ‘going to each other’s rooms’ is just normal.”

The atmosphere was getting more and more heated. Ignoring her warnings entirely, they all continued to fight.

“I said stop—”

“Why don’t you stop being so hung up on the ‘room’? The kind of relationship I have with Reina is where she makes me lunch every single day.”

“Yes, as a friend.”

“Everyone, stop it—”

“You’re making a fuss over just lunch boxes. I went on a trip with Reina.”

The competition they began holding was about ‘Who’s closer to Reina?’ whilst completely not caring about her at all.

“Everyone, please just stop—”

“It wasn’t a trip. You were dispatched there.”

“It was fate that we ran into each other at the Thurn Village.”

“…Still, we were—”

TAK!

In the end, Reina’s patience reached its limit. She stood up right then.

“Huu… I guess my words don’t sound like words to you all.”

As she spoke with a low voice, Reina looked at each one of the three men who had gone mum.

“You all seem fine enough talking without me. Then, continue doing that. You don’t need me here.”

At that moment, everyone seemed to be in agony. They hurriedly tried to latch onto her, but they all stopped when they heard a sharp sigh.

“Don’t chase after me. Don’t hold me back. Don’t make any excuses. Anyone who tries anything won’t even be able to step into the Chantra manor anymore.”

“……”

“……”

“……”

Her stern warning echoed inside the room, and as if the three of them had lost the ability to speak, they kept their mouths shut.

Reina swept a hand over her forehead and turned around, clicking her tongue inwardly. Then, she tried to head into the mansion.

No, she tried to. She would have headed inside if only she hadn’t heard a powerful explosion in the background.

Thud—!

Fwick—!

BANG—!

“……”

Watching the white dust flying like pollen, Reina thought to herself silently.

‘Haa. Seriously, these punks… Friends, engagements—whatever. I wanna just throw it all away.’
