Ch153 - The Real Pope

The Privy Council was located in the center of the Holy City, adjacent to Mount Moriah. The gorgeous building made of gray and white granite was surrounded by slow-flowing water channels, bringing a different and cool feeling to the arid desert.

The elders were all old men with gray hair and beards. They wore white classical robes that were knotted on the arms across the chest. They had thick eyebrows and big eyes, looking hale and kind.

Just as the survivors of the five teams were tense and ready to explode at any moment, the elders and the priests finally finished their discussions and announced loudly.

“According to the oracle, outsiders have the highest right to choose.”

What did this mean?

The survivors looked at each other.

Someone immediately thought of their main task, lowered their voice, and said, “Wait, isn’t our main quest to help the Holy City elect a Pope?”

Everyone suddenly had a realization.

Since the main quests said that they were required to help the Holy City elect the pope, there wasn’t any crooked way to complete the quest, so it must be some direct method. Now it seemed that this was the direct method.

The elder clapped his hands, and the attendants led a group of little boys in white robes and laurel wreaths to come forward. Without exception, the faces of these little boys were covered with thick headcloths that covered their eyes, and they could only walk along under the guidance of their attendants.

“These dozens of children are candidates for the Pope. Strangers from afar, please help us choose one who best fits your image. The Holy City cannot be left alone for a day. It is a century-old festival, and we need a qualified host.”

Hong Lie and his friend looked at each other with excitement in each other’s eyes.

“Dage, Teacher was right! The savior really comes from another world!”

The two former members of Gui Guzi’s party had made up their minds.

Because of the prophecy, Gui Guzi left an S-rank prop as a backup early on.

This prop was called [Storage Box].

The prop itself did not have offensive power, but they could choose an existence in the horror instances to bring back to the infinite loop, charging different fees according to the type. If it was a dead object, it only needed a few hundred or thousands of points to bring back. Gui Guzi had tested it, and even after obtaining the consent of an NPC, he could stuff the NPC into the storage box to bring them back. But the points required to do so were almost sky-high.

Now was not the time to worry about survival points. If they could really find a savior to inherit Gui Guzi’s mantle, everyone was a person who understood the greater picture. People from the five teams were all here. If everyone gathered their survival points, they could definitely bring the savior back to the world inside the infinite loop.

The survivors here were whispering, and the elder priests over there were also waiting patiently without any urging.

Compared to other children who were too rigid to move, the little Devil was obviously much more relaxed.

He stood there, and even though his eyes were covered by thick stripes of cloth, he still had a smile on his face, looking lively and quick.

On the other side, the elders were still explaining to the survivors.

“Usually, there is no Pope in the Holy Church. Under the leadership of God, all people in the world are equal. Only in the Holy Church ceremonies that are held every hundred years does the Pope need to personally preside over it.”

“I think you all understand that our world is perfect because everyone does good.”

The Great Elder stroked his gray beard and sighed, “But human beings are a combination of good and evil. It is too difficult to maintain such perfection. It has been ninety-nine years since the last ceremony. Although the world is still peaceful and there is no war or conflict, the newly born evil is still ready to move… We need a new and imminent purification.”

“Since ancient times, God has given us the Holy Son and handed them over to the Holy Church’s century-old blessing ceremony. At that time, at the blessing ceremony, the Pope, who has the mission given by God, will purify all mankind.”

The survivors understood one by one.

At the beginning, everyone thought that this S+ rank instance world was born as perfect as its name, but now it seemed that it was not the case.

Just like their of their main mission, helping to select the Holy Son and completing the Holy Festival, it was so natural.

The elders pointed to the little boys behind them, “These children are all born at the same time from all over the world, and one of them is born to be the representative of God.”

At this time, the priests came forward with brocade boxes that contained clean and transparent white crystals.

The survivors immediately received a notification from the system.

[C-rank prop: storage crystal]

[Prop use: separate the evil thoughts from the living body, store malice]

Seeing the puzzled expressions of the survivors, the clergy immediately explained, “This is the god-given crystal of the Holy Church. As the name suggests, it is a holy object bestowed by God. Now, please put your hands on it.”

The survivors did as they were told.

Unlike when the priests held it, when the survivors held the crystal in their hands, strands of black mud-like things separated from their bodies, suddenly dyeing the pure white crystals an ominous color.

The priest said softly, “Guests, don’t panic. You are not from this world. You have not experienced the purification ceremony a hundred years ago. It is normal to have evil thoughts in your body.”

“Exactly.” The Great Elder said gently, “The most important point in judging the Pope is to be able to purify malice.”

“Guests who came from afar, you can use the god-given crystal to judge and choose the real Pope.”

“The previous explanation covers the situation. If you have any questions, you can ask them all at once. We will definitely tell you everything.”

So the survivors began to ask questions in a hurry.

Someone asked, “Your Excellency, we found a few documents in the Holy City’s library a few days ago. Are these left by our predecessors?”

In Perfect World, there were really no supernatural beings and the psychic mediums in the teams were all useless.

Under the premise that it was really impossible to find out more information, the survivors touched the central library of the Holy City, and they found some unexpected clues there.

S-rank instances in the infinite loop were basically a small world of its own, so every few years, the same S-rank instance might be opened again, which was a well-known fact for experienced survivors.

There were many S-rank instances with absurd difficulty, and survivors could find clues left by their predecessors in the instances. One of the most famous was the famous S-rank instance “Evil Spirit Ancient Well”.

Back then, a group of survivors entered the instance and they accidentally found a diary left under the bed of an abandoned hut.

The diary was left by the trainees when the instance was opened previously. It recorded that after they entered the instance, the top psychic in the team accidentally linked to the evil spirit of the ancient well. They were almost all killed by the evil spirit on the first day of entering the instance via homeopathic invasion of the body.

It was a pity that none of the other trainees could recognize them. The last three teams were wiped out. The only survivor hid in the hut, wrote the final diary with blood, and chose to commit suicide.

Since this was the case for S-ranks, then S+ ranks naturally did their part.

What the survivors found in the library were the notes left by the survivors who entered this S+ rank instance last time.

Surprisingly, not just one group was recorded in the notes. Going back, almost a full five teams had left records in these notes.

The records of the first five teams were no exception, and even the main quests were the same as theirs. All were to help the Holy City to elect a pope, and to experience another Holy Festival.

Combined with the words of the priests that there was only one holy religious ceremony every hundred years, everyone sucked in a breath of air.

This meant that the time span of this notebook was at least five hundred years!

“Yes, that’s right.”

The elders smiled and said, “Every hundred years, strangers will come to Perfect World to help us choose a Pope. You are the messengers sent by the gods, and you are also the noble and honored guests of our Holy City. Only you can choose the Pope candidates.”

Although the time in the instance and the infinite loop flow rate were different, judging from the fact that they had never heard of a S+ rank instance, the last team to enter the Perfect World was at least ten years ago.

The survivors were amazed.

What was gratifying was that the first five groups written in the notes had all successfully completed the mission, and there was nothing particularly dangerous. The seniors all said that they only needed to find the most special one among the group of little boys, the one who could purify sins.

[We didn’t expect that this S+ rank instance would be so simple, but it actually really is that simple. We only needed the clairvoyant in our team to do a fortune-telling, and the result came out]

[Continuing from the previous team: Yes indeed, but although this instance is simple, I don’t want to do it again. Let me give a word of advice to the latecomers, when you should be cruel, you must be cruel, as long as you can cross your own psychological defenses, what can’t you do? Ha ha】

Survivors’ notes have a special mark, and it was almost impossible to forge. Although the last sentence was worthy of scrutiny, the teams all said it was fine, so everyone was relieved.

Hong Lie asked one more question, “Your Excellency, what should the Pope do after the Holy Festival is over?”

The elder narrowed his eyes, “God’s agent will naturally return to heaven.”

Hong Lie subconsciously felt that something was wrong, but his body waved his hand first, “I have no other intentions, just asking out of curiosity.”

The rest of the survivors helped cover up the faux pas.

Obviously, the savior in Gui Guzi’s prophecy was the same person as the Pope who has the ability to purify in the Perfect World.

They wanted to bring the savior back to the infinite loop, wasn’t that just trying to abduct the Pope? Even if the humane instance was a Perfect World, if they took away the top leader of their holy religion, who would be willing to allow it?

“Don’t worry, we have to think long-term about this matter.”

Another old member patted Hong Lie’s hand, and asked in a loud voice, “Your Excellency, what if we accidentally choose the wrong one?”

“If you make the wrong choice, the world will come to an end, and you will not be able to return.”

The elder sighed, “Outsiders, please be careful.”
