Ch171 - “I’ve wanted to do this for ages now”

The two system announcements blew everyone’s minds.

Trainees in the banquet hall exchanged flummoxed looks, narrowed eyes filling with gargantuan doubt.

Zong Jiu the Magician succeeded in finding the instructor and deducing his true identity???

All eyes turned to the two men standing at the centre of the dance floor.

The Magician’s white hair spilled over his shoulders and down his back, glittering like an incandescent river of stars under the warm lighting.

On his head glowed a lavish red-accented silver crown, revealing his new status as a crowned S-rank.

A man stood in front of the Magician, half of his head of black hair illuminated by the light whilst the other half remained in the shadows.

The Devil bowed his head and stared at him. There was a meaningful smile on his face, quietly sharp and extremely invasive.

The king who held the authority and the devil of the abyss matched gazes for a long time.

The former’s eyes were blazing with competitiveness, and the pupils of the latter’s dark golden eyes were almost narrowed into a vertical line, an abstruse quality rolling in the colour inside.

If the Magician was the one who had found the instructor, then the identity of the instructor naturally spoke for itself.

The live broadcast stilled for a moment before being flooded in concert.

[Ahahahahaha, this is actually not a surprising result. If he is the instructor, it all makes sense.]

[Exactly, that is him, after all. When everyone was placing bets at first, there were few who bet on him, then many fanatical followers went around asking others to place their bets on him. Looks like it’s their win this time.]

[The instructor is a trainee with higher authority. Besides No. 1, I really cannot think of anyone else more suitable. Or rather, this position is perfect for him. Who here doesn’t know how powerful he is? He’s not on the same level as ordinary trainees.]

[Hear, hear. The instructor must be powerful enough to inspire respect. It has to be someone that can convince everyone at least. While No. 2 is a decent choice, he doesn’t hold a candle to that guy.]

[Totally, everyone hit the nail on its head, ahahahaha.]

All comments on the bullet chat were set on brainless praising mode, blowing praises of No. 1 to high heavens, as if it was only right that he held the position of the instructor. They entirely forgot their original speculation that the instructor was not among the trainees, that the instructor was the penguin, or other such outlandish remarks.

Some other comments were also set on praising the Magician.

[Holy shit. The Thriller Trainee competition is only a few rounds in and the Magician has risen to S-rank. My god, this batch of newcomers is really scary.]

We’re sorry for MTLers or people who like using reading mode, but our translations keep getting stolen by aggregators so we’re going to bring back the copy protection. If you need to MTL please retype the gibberish parts.

[Everyone already felt that when he rose to A-rank. But now that he has risen to S-rank, my eyes almost dropped out in shock. Too strong! I still remember how he came into the competition as a lowly E-rank trainee. The speed of his progress cannot be compared to a rocket—it’s even faster than light!]

[Yes… I remember that too. He was a puny E-rank when he first entered the competition, then, because he was good-looking, the bullet chat was roasting him for being a pretty face and riding on an S-rank’s tailcoats. They even claimed that he sold his body to make a deal with a bigshot… I should really get those stupid whiners to eat their words.]

[My god, No. 9!! No. 9!! One spot higher than Tsuchimikado! Magician, mummy loves you!!!! (Sorry, I don’t mean to imply that I’m looking down on Tsuchimikado, I’m just deeply moved by how the Magician has managed to rise above a veteran. Don’t flame me, thanks all.)]

[AHHHHHHHH, a new S-rank is born!! And No. 1 personally crowned him!! But I just want to whisper something here, why do I feel that the atmosphere between them is a bit strange, am I imagining things.jpg]

Their temperaments could be described as night and day. One was cold and indifferent while the other was crazy and sharp. Yet, unexpectedly, when they stood together, the image was incredibly harmonious—like they had come together to form a small world that no one else was allowed to intrude on.

Just then, a comment unobtrusively piped up.

[Um. About that. I just want to point out… Look at the Magician’s black gloves… Yeah. Which means that, haven’t we guessed the wrong Devil the whole time…?]

The entire live broadcast: “…”

Now that the lights were on and the truth was clear, everyone could see that the Devil was wearing white gloves while the Magician was actually wearing black leather half-finger tactical gloves.

That was a big problem.

When the ‘Devil’ made his appearance at the entrance of the banquet hall, the live broadcast was rife with speculation, analysing his aura, body shape, actions, and demeanour. They then determined that the one with black gloves must be the Devil himself.

What was even more awkward was that not only did they decide on the one with black gloves, but they were also picking fault with the one with white gloves. Some claimed that his posture was too frivolous, while others said that he was too casual. They made a big fuss out of it, even swearing on their allegiance that he most assuredly was not the Devil.

Now…

For the first time, the live broadcast room ground to a halt for almost five full minutes.

[It’s all due to the cunningness of the magician, who disguised himself too successfully, that we were deceived! I am most definitely not a fake fan.]

[That’s right! We must add an ability to the magician, which is to achieve a perfect disguise. When you think about it, it’s also a magician’s job. It’s all due to the fact that No. 9 is too strong, making us look like noobs next to him.]

[Sobs, I agree. No. 1, I didn’t mistake you on purpose. It’s all the Magician’s fault.]

An incredulous voice broke the silence of the banquet hall.

“How can that be? Clearly I should be No. 9.”

The person who spoke was dressed in a strange Miao costume and had one eye covered. He wore tinkling silver accessories from head to toe and looked downright gloomy.

Many people recognised him.

The A-rank trainee, the Parasite Breeder.

He was a powerful A-rank trainee who had been famous even back in the infinite loop. Many people initially thought he could secure a place in the preliminary evaluation, but to their surprise, Tsuchimikado became No.10 whereas he was relegated to A-rank.

The Parasite Breeder had a petty, vindictive character. He had been bearing a grudge over this for a long time now.

However, in the following evaluations, either the S-rank threshold was too high or because of his lack of luck, the Parasite Breeder was always unable to advance. It left him highly dissatisfied. This time, an S-rank finally fell, whereas he performed well in the team dungeon and received a double S-rank evaluation. Naturally, he was confident in winning the S-rank throne.

Who would have guessed that his road to glory was stopped by a Magician who practically came out of thin air.

Normally, the Parasite Breeder feared No. 1’s authority and would not dare to speak up.

But it was different now. The Parasite Breeder had received a system prompt two days ago secretly informing him that he was internally set to be No. 9. Otherwise, he also wouldn’t have gone up so arrogantly to the Forest Shaman and the Magician, the other S-rank candidates in running.

Zong Jiu spared him a glance before shifting his gaze away disinterestedly.

On the contrary, it was the Devil who had a hint of displeasure appear on his face at having their staredown interrupted.

The cold, inhumane dark gold eyes landed on the Parasite Breeder. His knees almost buckled in fright.

But when he thought of the S-rank position that should have gone to him, he clenched his fists, stuttering, “Mi-Milord.”

The Parasite Breeder forced himself to avert his gaze. He stared hatefully at the Magician’s beautiful side profile. “The Magician couldn’t possibly have performed better than me in the last instance. Milord, you are the instructor. I implore you to pass a fair judgement.”

“Oh?” The black-haired man arched an eyebrow with interest. It was difficult to tell from his expression whether he was amused or enraged. “Are you accusing me of showing favouritism?”

Cold sweat poured off the Parasite Breeder. “N-No, I don’t mean that at all, Milord. I simply think that he must have used some unscrupulous means, such as…”

No longer able to withstand the brunt of the increasingly cold and murderous aura, the Parasite Breeder finally caved, kneeling to the ground with a thud, trembling all over. He didn’t stop his mouth, stammering out the speculation he held in his heart.

The banquet hall was pin-drop silent.

The live broadcast was similarly silent for a moment before it exploded.

[Holy shit, does the Parasite Breeder have a death wish? He actually publicly accused him of bending the rules for the Magician. I’m lighting joss sticks for him. Have a nice trip to the underworld.]

[It actually took me a solid second to react. Too brave, too brave.]

[Fuck, didn’t we just talk about it? This mindless slander has followed the Magician since he entered the competition. Why are there people still believing in it until now? Forget it, I’ll also light up a joss stick. He was a good man.]

[Perhaps it’s because the Magician is really too good-looking. The white-haired Magician beauty can step on me!]

[Hang on… wasn’t there someone saying not long ago that the atmosphere between No. 1 and No. 9 seems somewhat unusual… um, a bold guess has occurred to me…]

[Friend, you’re not alone. /wag eyebrows.jpg]

Unlike the spirited discussion in the live broadcast, the entire banquet hall was bathed in silence.

Everyone was frantically exchanging their shock with their eyes while silently expressing sincere condolences for the brave warrior.

This was the first person who dared to openly doubt No. 1 in years.

However, to everyone’s surprise, the black-haired Devil suddenly dropped the murderous aura and chuckled cryptically.

“That is a decent idea.”

In an instant, a thick shadow surged up from the marble floor of the dance floor, transforming into a thick curtain that suddenly shrouded the two people standing in the centre of the dance floor.

By the time other trainees in the hall reacted, No. 1 had already disappeared with the newly appointed No. 9.

What did it feel like to shuttle through shadows?

Zong Jiu had the fortune of becoming the first little white guinea pig the Devil brought along for this experience.

After a whirlwind of movement, he was pressed against the hard wall of an S-rank room, a body as cold as an ice cellar crowding him in.

“He wasn’t wrong.”

The Devil looked down into those beautiful pale pink eyes, his voice hoarse and provocative, “I’ve wanted to do this for ages now.”

He held the Magician’s chin between two fingers and kissed him directly.
