Episode 79 – Ingredients for Top-grade Potions

TL Note: Sponsored chapter (3/3)

I first had to ask the grandma if she would sell that many Magic Potions to me though.

“Excuse me, this is a separate matter from the potion brewing… I wanted to buy a large bulk of Magic Potions, would that be alright?” (Lewin)
“Yeah, of course that’s fine with me. I can’t give you a discount, but how many do you want?” (Grandma)
“Actually, I was thinking of buying about 30 gold coins worth of Magic Potions…” (Lewin)
“Ehh?!! You’re going to buy that many?! It works out great for me, but… I wonder if I even have that many Magic Potions in stock?” (Grandma)
The grandma went to the shelf behind the counter and started searching. She took some of the potions from the shelf and put them on the counter in front of me.

“These are the same Low-grade Magic Potions you bought yesterday, but there are currently only 10 left in stock.” (Grandma)
“Ah, then I’ll take those 10. Are there any other qualities of Magic Potion available to be sold?” (Lewin)
“Magic Potions of different qualities? In that case, I think I have enough for 30 gold coins worth. Which quality do you want more of?” (Grandma)
“Can you give me a good balance of Magic Potions ranging from minimum to high quality?” (Lewin)
“Good balance…? Then I’ll see to it that you get exactly 30 gold coin’s worth of Magic Potions, including these 10 Low-grade Magic Potions.” (Grandma)
“Thank you so much!” (Lewin)
While I waited for the grandma to pick the assortment of potions from the shelf behind the counter at her own discretion, I looked at the Top-grade Magic Potion that cost 9 gold coins, sitting on the display shelf nearby. Now that I thought about it, the grandma did say just now that, if only Magical Grass was used, the maximum quality that would come out would only be Medium-grade. That made me suddenly start wondering what ingredients this Top-grade Magic Potion was made out of…

“What’s wrong? Are you interested in that Top-grade Magic Potion?” The grandma said to me as she came back with a tray of neatly arranged Magic Potions and saw me staring motionlessly at the Magic Potion. This was a good chance, so I decided to ask her.

“Right… Since you said earlier that Medium-grade Magic Potions were the highest quality that would come out of using only Magical Grass, I was wondering how this Top-grade Magic Potion was produced.” (Lewin)
“I see. The raw material used in this Top-grade Magical Potion is something called Demonstar Herb, which only grows in dungeons where there is thickly concentrated magic power. Well, even though it’s Top-grade, the potion base is still made from Magical Grass.” (Grandma)
Demonstar Herb… It was something I’d never heard of before. At least, it was a herb that was never used in my time working in the Healer’s Guild. Also… a dungeon? Yet another concept I hadn’t heard of.

“Demonstar Herb? I’ve never heard of this herb before. Also, is a dungeon just a place with thickly concentrated magic power?” (Lewin)
“If you don’t know of dungeons, you wouldn’t have heard of Demonstar Herb before. I suppose, a dungeon is a place with thickly-concentrated magic power that is usually crawling with monsters. In my younger days, I used to go dungeon crawling often, but… it’s already been ages since I last went.” (Grandma)
As she recalled the past, the grandma had a nostalgic smile on her face. So it was a plant that grew in places near swarms of monsters…? That would explain the high price of 9 gold coins. To be honest, someday I’d like to collect some of the plants that live in those sorts of places, but… I still had a long way to go until then.

“Thank you for that valuable piece of information. You really know a lot of things, don’t you, grandma? Ah… come to think of it, I think I managed to discover the dish with spices that you told me about the other day! Thanks to that, I was able to find hope in eating bitter things…” (Lewin)
After that, just like always, another long conversation with the grandma ensued. I never intended to overstay my welcome or take too much of her time, but… the grandma was so knowledgeable that I always ended up asking her a lot of questions.

“—-Well, when spices are mixed with All-Herb, the combination is capable of erasing the peculiar tastes, so it’s a method that’s quite useful for brewing potions… Ah. I’ve started rambling again… Our conversations always flow on so long because your responses are good, Lewin. Sorry you always have to sit through this old person’s ramblings.” (Grandma)
“No, not at all! It’s because I’m always bringing up new topics. I should be the one apologizing for always taking up your time with all of these questions.” (Lewin)
“Alright, then back to what we were talking about before… Say, are these potions good with you? 20 Minimum-grade Magic Potions, 10 Low-grade Magic Potions, 10 Medium-grade Magic Potions, and 6 High-grade Magic Potions, which comes out to exactly 30 gold coins.” (Grandma)
“That’s great! I’ll buy them all!” (Lewin)
“Alright, thanks for your patronage. I’ve confirmed your payment of exactly 30 gold coins. With this… the stock of Minimum-grade Magic Potions has been wiped clean. Thanks for buying them.” (Grandma)
“Likewise, thank you so much! I’ll come back again soon regarding the potion brewing request, so I’ll see you then!” (Lewin)
“Sure thing. I’ll be waiting!” (Grandma)
She told me a lot of useful information about potion brewing and even sold me a lot of potions. I had a lot to thank the grandma for. I left Elf’s Tears, thinking to myself that I would repay her for her kindness one day.
