Episode 82 – Knife Forging Request

The next day, I hung up the Dumbbell Weed that I had synthesized the night before to dry in the sun and then went to do my morning training. Today, while I was immersing myself in sword practice for three hours, I once again spotted that woman from the Knights of the Royal Order running in the area.

After my morning training session, I checked my schedule for the day. First, I had to go to Iron Will to get the Angry Wolf Fang forged into a knife. After that, I had to go to Elf’s Tears to pick up the potions I had requested the grandma to brew. And last, I had to go to Clive’s shop to buy some more spices to make curry. While I was there, I also wanted to hear his evaluation of the Glutamate Herb.

It was a pretty tight schedule, but it would be nice to get everything done today so that all I had to do tomorrow was eat Dumbbell Weed and train with my sword. I wanted to devote myself to training for about one month before going on another expedition to gather plants and herbs.

The schedule for the year would probably be something like… go on a plant and herb gathering quest commission with [Iron Gear] once a month and then stay in an inn and train until the next quest commission. Because I was currently the weakest, if I didn’t at least spend this much time intensively training myself, I wouldn’t be able to get stronger in the shortest amount of time.

After confirming my schedule to some extent, I didn’t have any time to waste, so I immediately took the Angry Wolf Fang and headed to Iron Will. Come to think of it… I wondered how much money it would cost to process the Angry Wolf Fang into a knife. Since I would be providing the material for it, and considering that last time I bought a steel sword and Lightmetal Chestplate for 10 gold coins, I was guessing that it wouldn’t cost too much. If it required too much money, I could just wait until the next plant and herb gathering quest commission to amass a sizable sum of money and then go back and request him to make the knife at that time.

As I was thinking that, I arrived at Iron Will. I pushed open the door, and a gust of hot air from the forges along with the blood-like smell of metal hit me. Today as well, there was no sign of Dantetsu at the counter, but I could hear the rhythmic, piercing sound of a hammer striking iron ringing from the back of the store. I didn’t start to examine the merchandise without his permission like the first time and called out loudly to Dantetsu instead.

“Dantetsu-san!! Are you here? I came to buy something!” (Lewin)
I shouted loudly so the sound of striking iron wouldn’t overpower my voice, and, soon enough, the sound of hammering coming from the back of the store stopped. Almost immediately after, I heard the rumbling sound of heavy footsteps as he came running towards me.

“HEY, IT’S LEWIN!! Whatchu got for me today? Is it gonna be maintenance?” (Dantetsu)
Dantetsu welcomed me heartily in a deafening voice that was far louder than my own shout just now. It was so loud that just hearing it made my head throb, but I was grateful for his unreservedly warm welcome.

“Ah, no. Today I brought a certain ingredient that I wanted to request you to process into a knife for me. Would you be willing to accept such a request?” (Lewin)
“Ooh, a smithing commission, huh?!! ‘Course I’ll do it! Since it’s a custom-made order, it’ll be expensive, but, if you’re gonna be providing the materials, I think I can make it a bit cheaper!!” (Dantetsu)
“Really?! Thank you very much!” (Lewin)
After I said that, I took the Angry Wolf Fang out of my bag and showed it to Dantetsu. When he saw the sharp, long fang of the Angry Wolf, he inspected it carefully before making a somewhat complicated expression.

“Hmm!! A monster’s fang, huh…? Umu. This is gonna be rather difficult.” (Dantetsu)
“Difficult? I thought for sure that it was going to be easier than dealing with an ore though…” (Lewin)
“Well that’s because the fang has to be refined and polished entirely by hand. If you hit it with a hammer, there’s a good chance it’ll be ruined!” (Dantetsu)
“I see… Then the forging price would become fairly expensive, right?” (Lewin)
“That’s right. With this size, I’d say… about 5 gold coins!” (Dantetsu)
Wuu… it was more expensive than I’d thought it’d be. My total wealth amounted to 9 gold coins at the moment, so spending 5 gold coins at this point in time would leave me a bit strapped for cash. Keeping my next plant and herb gathering quest commission in mind, it didn’t seem like I would be able to request the knife this time around.

“Is that so… I’m sorry, even though I was the one who brought it up… would it be alright to request this knife next time?” (Lewin)
“Hmm…? Do you not have enough money?” (Dantetsu)
“Umm… I’ll be straight with you here, that’s what it is.” (Lewin)
“…Then, you can bring the money next time! You’re Ahmed’s buddy after all! I’ll go ahead and process the knife for you, and you can pay me whenever the money comes in!” (Dantetsu)
“Eh? Is that okay?!” (Lewin)
“Yeah!! Ahmed’s friends wouldn’t bail on me, and I’ve been wanting to work with monster material for a while now! You can keep your hopes up and wait for me. I’ll make it the best it can be!” (Dantetsu)
“Thank you so much, Dantetsu-san!” (Lewin)
“Gahahaha!! It’s all good!” (Dantetsu)
After Dantetsu said he would accept a deferred payment, I made sure to thoroughly thank him. I really appreciated his gesture. At this rate, I would be able to bring the Angry Wolf Knife with me on my next gathering quest commission. Of course, I was really grateful that Dantetsu accepted the request, but I also had to thank Ahmed for introducing me to Iron Will. I remembered the faces of the people from [Azure Alliance], who were still helping me even after they were gone… I couldn’t wait to meet them again.
