Chapter 30 – Suspicion

“Thank you for your good work. How was he?”

“I don’t know. It seems to be connected, but it’s not. Something like that.”

“It’s unusual for Master to react like this.” [T/n: It’s Master as Masuta or Guild Master in this context.]

“Hmm. Did he finish the registration? If so, let me see.”

“The registration details are… here.”

“I thought he was half a long-lived race, but the report is human, huh…? Impossible. If he really is 13 years old, he’s just like those four.”

“Huh? Has he shown you any skills?”

“No, no, I can’t be sure, but I don’t think so. That’s why it doesn’t connect…”

“Um, Master… I have no idea what you’re talking about?”

The Master sits deep in his chair, staring at it, and exhales deeply while placing his fist on his forehead.

It shouldn’t be like this anymore. He dives into a sea of thoughts.

This is not a situation where I can say: “This is my chair.”

“Peiro, do you remember the artifacts that were recovered from the forest about six years ago?”

“Oh, you’re back early… I believe they were ‘something identifiable as a shoe,’ a mysterious plate with glass material on it of unknown use,’ and ‘what appears to be an elaborately made watch.'”

“Yes… I believe he was wearing what appeared to be a watch on his arm. It looked like he was hiding it under his clothes, but the shape was quite similar. Also… if I’m not mistaken, it was working.”

“Huh? Wait… does he have something called an artifact that is classified as a national secret? If it were said that it also worked, the country would be in an uproar, wouldn’t it?”

“No doubt. This development could lead to a big growth of Bezart as the closest city to the artifact. A large search party will be dispatched from the countryside, and hunters, lured by the rewards, will come in large numbers.”

“At last, a desolate, remote town will be reborn… 6 After six years of no progress at all, it’s very impressive.”

“But we can’t let our guard down. Loki said he has a purpose, but what is that purpose? Does it even make sense that he would go out of his way to call himself the Demon King, even though he made that name up?”

“Hmm, I saw him leave the guild a few minutes ago, and he was wearing something strange, whether it was his outfit or the bag he was carrying. Did you ask him directly?”

“No way. What if we get to the bottom of this, and in the unlikely event that things go against us? Do you have confidence in your ability to survive if he activates some unknown skill that hasn’t even been confirmed?”

“If there’s a possibility that he’s the same kind of person as those four, then let’s not do it. At worst, the city itself could be wiped out!”

I was ashamed of myself for making such a thoughtless remark.

I don’t think any of those famous four are the kind of people who are adept at fighting, but…

At least the other three can easily turn an army.

Anyone with a certain amount of power and information knows that they are skilled enough to crush a small country if things go badly.

Bezart could be gone in a matter of hours. There is no good in making enemies.

But looking at him, crying over a piece of meat he just saw, he doesn’t look like the kind of person who would do such a big thing…

“…Peiro, you’re the one who should do Loki’s training.”

“…Eh?”

“Unlike me, you’ve been in the field before, so you’re the right person for the job. Whatever questions come up, you’ll answer them with everything you know.”

“…..”

“Don’t think it’s a problem, okay? He’s the same type as me. First of all, he notices these feelings right away. So, ask as many questions as you can. And report all the questions to me.”

“The same as Master …… and may have several heavenly skills… No, no, no! That’s scary!!!”

“It is possible that the purpose could be narrowed down based on what he asks you. As long as you smile and answer generously and normally, you should be fine. Don’t think about anything else.”

“N-no way…”

The church bell rang some time ago to indicate that it was lunchtime.

It’s time for the boy in question to return.

How long have I been carrying this burden?

It’s obvious.

It is because a mysterious object called an artifact was recovered from that forest.

Amanda, the receptionist who received it from the hunter, and I, the person in charge of managing the artifact, have been caught up in the schemes of the state and the master.

What in the world is that thing whose material is unknown? It’s certainly intriguing…

I still can’t make up my mind because I don’t think the balance between my desire to get ahead and the danger to myself is right.

“Gosh, Peiro, you’re so unmanly; why don’t you let me take your place?”

“Amanda, huh? You could at least knock.”

“Even though I brought you a cup of tea… you’re afraid of what will happen if you disrespect the people who know what’s going on, right?”

“…I assume you heard what was said with your Eavesdropping skills, right? Can you do that?”

“At least I give the impression that I’m responsible for him. It’s a bit personal, but… it shouldn’t be alarming, right?”

“Personal? …Amanda-san, are you flirting again?”

“Isn’t it good? He’s got a cute little face like a small animal you don’t find around here… unlike Peiro, and I’m looking forward to seeing his future!”

“…At least don’t get too personal when it comes to artifacts. If that’s the case, I’ll allow it.”

“Of course, if I get it right, you’ll give me a special bonus, right?”

“Depends on the content, but I’ll consider it.”

W-well, as expected from Amanda-san, the head receptionist… she’s got a lot of guts.

But now I won’t be stared at directly by the reincarnate.

For me, living is the most important thing, and getting promoted is just a bonus.

While thanking Amanda, Peiro stared at the empty chair.
