Chapter 44 – Job Selection

Hah… I got more money than I expected, but I feel kind of mixed up about it.

Even though I decided to accept the armor, I had a fight with Paisa-san about the cost afterward.

“From the beginning, I was thinking of budgeting a total of one million yen for the equipment. So I’ll leave that amount behind!”

“What an idiot! I only sold the sword! Then it would have been 550,000 beeke!”

“Even the armor would be worth a lot in this state! Besides, I didn’t hear that the armor came with a grant!”

“I had to take it down because it’s not for sale! In other words, it’s my personal property! It’s not right for me to charge you for it!”

I had always bargained with him, but this time, I did the opposite: I raised the price.

This exchange went on for at least half an hour, and finally, we settled on buying the best of the leather waistcoat holders to hang the sword on.

Still, it was a total of 700,000 beeke.

The armor may be second-hand, and it is not surprising that some people find it bringing bad luck, and others find it creepy.

Everyone has their own way of perceiving things. I won’t complain if people say that.

It’s just that… it feels oddly right, and for some reason, I feel comfortable with this armor.

A quick touch reveals a number of fine scratches on the surface. I guess this is proof of the son’s hard work.

If that’s the case, I’d like to reap the monsters in place of the son who lost his dream in the middle of his life.

Even if it is self-satisfaction, the thought that it will somehow be a memorial motivates me to do my best.

I bought four potions, five poison potions, a large leather bag, and a day’s worth of portable food from a store popular with hunters and made my way to the church, my final destination.

I had previously purchased only one potion at Amanda-san’s suggestion, but I had not had a chance to use it in the Great Forest of Palmera and had left it in the leather bag reserved for coins.

Five of each of these potions would be enough for a trial run for now.

On the other hand, if I use them all in one day of hunting, I will not be ready for the Rocker Plains.

A potion costs 3,000 beeke, and a poison potion costs 6,000 beeke.

The total cost is 45,000 beeke, so if I spend that much money on recovery in one day, my income will be in question.

As I put the potion into the slightly larger leather bag I bought with it, I also looked at the mysterious burnt-brown object that was my first portable food.

To put it mildly, it’s a slightly large biscuit, about half the size of a fist; to put it worse, it’s horse manure…

It was a mysterious object that smelled nothing like that but looked like something that had been kneaded together, hardened to a crisp, and dried.

The person who made this is a big deal in many ways because it hits you with the full force of its bad taste just by looking at it.

This is food, right?

I’ll try it anyway to see what it tastes like, but if it’s too far below my expectations, I’ll ask the innkeeper if she can make me a lunch box…

While I was strolling and thinking about this, I arrived at the church.

Today, I did not see any sisters at the entrance, so I went inside. There were several ordinary people sitting on chairs, and one was kneeling in prayer before the statue of the Goddess.

Since the priest was not there, I wondered if this was a prayer to the Goddess. As I thought about it, I looked around and saw the aunt sister talking to another sister by the wall.

“Hello!”

“Ara, aren’t you the little boy from the other day? Well, well, well, you’re dressed like a proper hunter… What’s up with you today?”

“Thank you for the other day. Thanks to you, I managed to save up some money, so I thought I would choose a job today.”

“You’ve already saved the money? That’s a surprise… Are you sure you’re not doing something wrong?”

“Please don’t say that! I’ve been working hard every day.”

“Hahaha, I’m just kidding. Come on, come here. I want you to meet Grandpa Priest.”

I followed her to the door on the right side of the room, which I had not entered before, and found the priest sitting at his desk, writing something in his modest office.

“Grandfather, this one wants to choose a job. You can still do it today, right?”

“Yes? I can still receive the Oracle, so it’s all right.”

The priest who stood up and came toward us was probably about 60 years old when seen up close.

He looks about the same age as the Guild Master, Yagov-san, but this man seems much nicer.

“I am Trail, a priest in this town.”

“My name is Loki. I have come here today to ask you for a job.”

“Hmm… You’re still young, and you’ve already chosen a job. I’ll just check to make sure, but are you sure about the offers? It’s something that requires a somewhat rare skill.”

“I’ve saved the minimum 500,000 beeke, so I should be fine, right?”

“Hoho… that’s fine. You’re pretty impressive for your age. I’m going to get ready now, so please wait in the chapel. Maryse, I’ll ask you to take care of the reception and the directions.”

“Aiyo. Okay, let’s go, little boy.”

Having been told that, I went back to the chapel with Sister Maryse and found that the people waiting for their turn to pray to the Goddess had left quickly, and there was only one person left.

“I will take the offering first. After that, you can sit next to the person waiting in this chair and wait. If you are idle, you will be overtaken.”

Well, when the preparation process goes on and on like this, my heart starts pounding, no matter how old I am…

I paid the 500,000 beeke as I was told, sat down in the chair, and looked at the six stone statues in front of me.

“They are just stone statues, and they all look the same. They look like Greek sculptures I saw in a textbook a long time ago. Although they are much more crude than that.)”

It is as if there is a template of a human figure, and then wigs and clothes are put on it to give it some individuality.

While I was wondering if this was the case in this civilization, the person I was waiting for knelt down in front of the stone statue, and about 10 seconds later, he walked into the room where the tablet was placed.

“(I see… prayer is free, but in the end, you need a ‘status judgment’ to know exactly what the result was. The Church has a good way of doing that…)”

Normally, if you want to acquire a new skill or raise the level of an acquired skill, everyone would want to know what the result was.

That’s why they come to pray, right?

If I had to choose between holding back and predicting the results of the level increase and acquisition based on my senses or using money to properly grasp my abilities, I would pay 20,000 beeke to grasp the results.

The great source of the church was the Fanmer Divine Empire, huh?

I have a feeling that this is a very rich country.

While I was thinking about it, the priest seemed to be ready and called to me.

He was wearing a slightly gaudy robe and holding an old-looking book that was said to be rare.

“Sorry to keep you waiting. Shall we begin?”

“Please take good care of me.”

“Please come this way.”

With these words, I was led by the hand to a place right in front of the same stone statue as the people who had just prayed.

When I looked closely at the foot of the statue, I could see that there was a circular stone of a different color inlaid into the stone, and I could visually tell that this was the place to pray.

“Please kneel down and pray to the Goddess. I will also pray to the Goddess to make your will known to the Goddess, so all you need to do is pray that you find the job that you want. If your wish is granted, an Oracle will send me a list of jobs that you can take, and if you choose one of them and pray to the Goddess again, you will be able to start your new job.”

“Do I choose who I pray to?”

“No. No, you should not pray to a particular Goddess but to all the Goddesses. Some of them may be able to give you a job you didn’t expect.”

“I see… I understand.”

I kneeled down, folded my hands in front of me, and prayed silently.

“(I want to get the job I want. I want to get the job I want. If possible, I want to get a job in the near field where I can easily increase my strength and defense… I have an evil thought that I have put away… Please, please, please, please!)”

I think the reason there is some kind of presence in the back of my head is because the priest is holding his hand over my head, as I have seen before.

“(I want to get the job I want… I want to get the job I want… I want to get the job I want.)”

“(Do… this… wor… uty?)”

“(…Let… chee… em… p…)”

“(Call… the… ers… pare…)”

“(What is it? I hear voices… I never heard such an explanation…?)”

“(…..)”

“(…..)”

“…It’s okay now. Please open your eyes.”

“(Heh?)”

What I heard was right in front of me.

Clearly different from Auntie Sister Maryse, her voice was clear and soothing just hearing it.

Feeling my heartbeat quickening naturally, I opened my eyes anxiously――

In the center of my field of vision, where the serene nature spreads out, three women were looking down at me.
