Chapter 117 – The proposed location of the Sarah Ferrule Cathedral (I)

The proposed site for the Sarah Ferrule Cathedral. If plans to build a town around the cathedral were included, the site was much larger than a typical Cathedral. The plan was to make use of the forest at the foot of the cape and connect the village to Lyon to the west. When completed, it would be a long, horizontal village facing the sea. However, it was unlikely that Wynn and Leticia would be able to see it completed in their lifetime.

Construction was proceeding at a rapid pace with many craftsmen from within and outside the Kingdom of Lyon, but it was expected to take many years to complete. They were going to build an entire town from scratch. Naturally, a great deal of money would be needed, and much of it would be donated by the Great Temple of Emerdia. It could be said that the capital power of the Church of Anastasia, with the Great Temple of Emerdia at its apex, was the greatest in the world. Even so, right after the war with the demons, the cost of building the cathedral was quite onerous, and it was even said that many of the priests in charge of the budget fainted at the sight of the amount involved. Nevertheless, the Great Temple of Emerdia had high hopes for the construction of the Sarah Ferrule Cathedral.

The problems that arose after the end of the war with the demons were the increase of refugees and soldiers who lost their place of work on the battlefield. In addition, the loss of demand on the battlefield resulted in a depressed market. It was hoped that the construction of the Sarah Ferrule Cathedral would provide a place for soldiers and refugees who had lost their places of work. They would also become residents of the new town that would be created by the construction. There were already craftsmen who had moved in with their families and were living and working in the town, along with others who were there to do business with them, forming a simple village.

With large-scale construction, supplies are needed. Mass-produced armor becomes nails and tools, and axes and machetes for clearing the forest. Stone and timber quarried to build fortresses became building materials for cities and cathedrals. In the port of Lyon, the royal capital of the Kingdom of Lyon, large ships filled with these goods from all over the continent were gathered. While most countries had suffered some kind of damage from the war with the demons, however large or small, Lyon was certainly one of the few countries enjoying an unprecedented economic boom.

Wynn was reminded of the vibrant city of Lyon as he took in the sight of the large ships anchored around the harbor and off the coast of Lyon.

“It’s a beautiful view.”

Leticia stood beside him, squinting to take in the scenery in the same way Wynn did. Wynn, Leticia and Mito had passed through a simple village built by artisans and merchants to visit the site of the proposed cathedral in the middle of the headland, and a temporary temple built next to it.

The shrine Sarah Ferrule used as a base was sealed with iron bars and chains, plus a strict magical barrier. It was necessary to lift the magical barriers and obtain permission to unlock the bars and chains. However, as for the magical barriers, there was a possibility that the person in charge of this temporary temple would not be able to lift them, as they were also created by Tiara, but if the case arose, Leticia could break the protections by force. But, in any case, she would have to ask permission to enter the sanctuary.

Before her death, Sarah Ferrule was an apostate who, unbeknownst to anyone, tried to bring the God of Destruction, but apparently she was a great saint who had saved the lives of many seriously ill and wounded. Although she had left this world, many pilgrims flocked to the small shrine on this promontory to cling to the glory of her canonization.

The Church of Anastasia, in an effort to continue the great work of Sarah Ferrule, had continued to perform the services that Sarah performed in the temporary temple before her death. In actuality, many people suffering from serious illnesses and injuries came to the temple. The clerics working at the temporary temple were busy, as were those responsible for running it, and when they heard from the assistant priest, Wynn and the others decided to wait quietly until the commotion died down. If Leticia the Brave showed up, Liara might be willing to join them no matter what, but Leticia didn’t want to exercise her privilege over the suffering people.

“It’s a nice place. I’m sure Sarah would be happy to see it.”

Even though it had been Leticia who had put an end to Sarah’s life, she couldn’t completely hate her. It was unforgivable that she had sacrificed so many lives to summon the God of Destruction, but she knew that Sarah had seen too much misery in her life to get to that point. It was also true that she had sacrificed many things to save suffering people.

The protracted battle against the demons. The creation of the Continental Anti-Demon Alliance, an army that gathered the power of all mankind.

The role played by the Great Temple of Emerdia in the victory of the war against the demons was enormous, and no one could deny its achievements. However, in order to maintain its position as the leader of the Continental Anti-Demon Alliance, a super-massive organization that transcended the framework of nations and races for the first time in history, the power it swelled quickly became a focus of corruption. The fact that the war dragged on may have been a factor. The founders died of old age or in battle, and the ideals of their creation were eventually lost. There was no help for the suffering people, and the struggle for control of the Alliance by those in power became fierce. In desperation, Sarah became an apostate.

The church to which Sarah originally aspired was probably the one that took place in this temporary temple. If only the powers had remembered the principles of the Alliance when it was founded, humanity might have been able to fight the demons a little better. Even if in the end they needed the help of Leticia von Mavis, they might have managed to push the demonic territory further north.

If Sarah had not fallen as an apostate and remained a saint, perhaps she might even have become the first female High Priestess of the Great Temple of Emerdia. That was Leticia’s thought as she watched the busy people working in the temporary temple.

Wynn offered to help, but was turned away. Probably because they thought an amateur would just get in the way. It was a soft refusal, but you could sense the nuance. In fact, they seemed busy, but you could tell they had enough manpower.

Sarah Ferrule was the third person in history to be canonized before her death. Because of her prestige, there seemed to be a lot of people gathered at this temporary temple. However, Wynn would later learn that the prestige of Sarah Ferrule’s name was not the only reason so many people had gathered.

In any case, the three were now bored. Mito found a sunny rock to sit on, and quickly began to doze off. Mito, the Sword Maker, had a sturdy body, but he was an old man of over a hundred years. During his journey so far, Mito always fell asleep when he had nothing to do. As a man who had lived through many battles, it was possible for him to actively take breaks when he could.

When Mito fell asleep, Wynn and Leticia moved to a place a little further away from him so as not to disturb his sleep. There was a break in the trees and they had a spectacular view of the city of Lyon. There was a cliff at their feet and the waves were crashing against it. The only sounds they could hear were the crashing of the waves against the rocks and the screeching of seabirds in the sky. Below them, the bright blue sea reflected the sunlight and stretched on forever. Beyond the horizon, land could be seen to the north, but only faintly.

“That shadow in the distance, is that land to the north where the Demon King descended?”

“Yes. Isn’t it amazing? It’s connected all the way up there.”

“The scale is so large it’s hard to imagine. Letty, you crossed this ocean, didn’t you?”

“Yes, but I didn’t do it from Lyon.”

Then they both looked at the sea for a while. The sea breeze, carrying the scent of the tide, passed between them. They heard the sound of a bell struck with a mallet in the harbor of Lyon.

“Look, Onii-chan. There’s a ship about to leave.”

“What, where?”

In the direction Leticia was pointing, there was a large sailboat much larger than the surrounding ships that were anchored offshore, and a small boat full of people was about to pull alongside it.

“That sailboat?”

As Wynn and Leticia watched with interest, it appeared that people had finished boarding the sailboat. The small empty boat was heading back to the port of Lyon. There was a crowd of people in the harbor. They were probably people who had come to see the sailboat off. They could be the families of the sailing ship’s crew, or perhaps people from the trading company that owned and shipped the ship. And then, the sound of bells hammering rang out again.

“They’re leaving port.” Wynn’s voice was heard.

The sails of the sailboat opened wide in the sea breeze, making the ship go faster and faster as they watched.

“You’re very lucky to be able to see the moment they set sail!”

“Yes.” Wynn responded to Leticia’s statement, which she said in an animated voice.

The departure of a large ship seemed to be a big event for those who dealt with ships and ports. The sound of bells in the sea breeze mingled with the faint cries of people watching them depart in the harbor.

“I wonder where that ship is going.”

“Who knows, where will it be? Although it looks like it’s heading northwest, maybe it’ll make a big turn and head south.”

At the end of the long voyage, which could take months or even years, the ship would probably return to the port of Lyon with a huge cargo. The cargo could be building material for the Sarah Ferrule Cathedral, rare gems and spices that can only be found in the south, or it could be the fat of a huge fish that lived in the sea and was said to be as big as a dragon. The blubber of this fish, called whale blubber, was said to be worth a fortune if it could be brought in on a ship full of it. As the sailboat sailed away with the expectations and cheers of the people, it also carried the dreams of many people.

The people on the boat may be similar to the adventurers. Wynn thought as he watched the sailboat from the top of the cape.

A sailboat for ocean voyages was a huge thing. Watching it sail out of the harbor, Wynn must have felt a sense of confidence from it. But from the distant cape, as huge as the sailboat was, it looked very small as it entered the vast ocean.

It was said that once the sea is rough, it is even more violent than the land. In the vastness of the sea, the only thing you could rely on was the boat you were on. What would happen if the boat capsized and they were thrown into the sea? The thought made Wynn shudder. Even though he was standing on a cliff, the sea below seemed so terrifying that he unconsciously took a step back.

The crew of a sailing ship was embarking on a long ocean voyage. What awaited them was a battle for their lives against nature. Believing that victory in this battle would bring them immense wealth and honor. It was much like the adventurers who set foot in the north of the continent. That’s what Wynn thought as he watched the ship head out to sea.

As the sailboat disappeared beyond the horizon, the horizon began to tint red with the setting sun.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

As they turned around, they saw a young woman in her early twenties, dressed in ornaments, standing with three other figures.

“If there’s enough room left with the construction of the cathedral, we’re thinking of making this place a park for everyone to use, with an observation deck.”

“Liara, long time no see, how are you?”

“That’s right. Same here, Letty.”

Liara Thane.

One of the three people who traveled with Leticia to defeat the Demon King. She was the fourth woman in history to be canonized before her death, after Sarah Ferrule, and was known as a Saint. Her healing magic was said to have reached the realm of the miraculous. When the Demon King descended upon the body of King Melvick IV of Thane, there were only three people left alive in the Kingdom of Thane.

Conrad Heisenberg, Sarah Ferrule and the granddaughter of Melvick IV.

Liara Thane was the daughter of Melvick IV’s daughter. However, it was hard to believe that she was the last of the royal bloodline of the Kingdom of Thane. Dressed in simple robes, Liara’s innocent appearance and atmosphere made Wynn feel longing in his heart.

“You’re Wynn-san, right? It’s nice to meet you. I’m Liara Thane.”

“I’m Wynn Bird. It’s an honor to meet you, Saint-sama.”

“Hmm, maybe those are words I should have said. By the way, there are some guests here to see you.”

Liara quickly turned her body to look at the three people accompanying her. If it weren’t for Liara’s presence, Wynn would have been the first to call them. All three were acquaintances of Wynn’s, but they were not supposed to be here. Leticia also looked a little surprised.

“Abel, Seri. Why are you here, and so is Liesbert-san.”

Abel and Seri seemed unable to hide their nervousness at Liara, whom they called Saint. However, they were relieved to see Wynn and Leticia, whom they knew well, and their tense faces relaxed slightly.

Abel raised his hand halfway to greet them, but then lowered it after twirling around as if unsure, perhaps worried about Liara. Seri gave a small gasp. And then.

“On the way to Elnasa, we heard there was a famous saint named Liara here, so we stopped just in case, but I guess this is the guide to the spirits that inhabit the World Tree. I never thought I’d see them here…”

Liesbert clenched his fists tightly and looked up at the sky.

“I have something to tell you, can you spare me a moment of your time later?”

Liesbert had a serious look on his face. Wynn, who had a mission, hesitated a bit, but Liesbert, an elven warrior of exceptional skill, had come all the way to the land of men. It might be urgent, so he nodded.

“I’m sure we can find something to talk about. Would you care to join us for dinner? What do you say, Letty?” Liara offered.

Indeed, the sun had long since set beyond the horizon, and the red border between sky and sea was growing darker, as if ink had been spilled on it. Stars twinkled in place of the sun in the sky, and the city of Lyon, which they could see from the headland was illuminated and smoke from the kitchens was rising into the sky. The temporary temple was also preparing dinner, and the good smell was wafting on the wind.

“Yes. The wind is getting colder and colder, and my body is completely frozen. I think I deserve a good meal.” Mito, who must have been sleeping some distance away, got up and walked over. “I’m not going to complain as long as there’s sake.”

“We can’t offer much in the way of hospitality, but we can prepare some drinks for our guests. But if you are a dwarf, we may come up short. I’ll send a messenger to town later to bring you some drinks.”

“Wahaha, this girl sure understands me. Come on you two, hurry inside.” Mito started walking quickly.

“Come on, Onii-chan.”

Leticia looked at Wynn, grabbed his hand and started walking behind Mito’s back as he took the lead. Liara looked at their linked hands and a slight smile was glimpsed on her face. She then headed to the temporary temple kitchen to give instructions on how to entertain the guests.
