Chapter 125 – The person I’ve always admired

If only Mito could have seen Reynard, he would have been able to dodge the red light spear with his excellent reflexes. However, the old dwarf had turned his back to cover Abel, who was desperately trying to protect himself from the attack of one of the gargoyles. Abel was fighting with his back to a pillar, wary of an attack from behind. Because of his position, Mito had no choice but to turn his back to Reynard.

“Mito-san!”

Three voices were heard shouting at once, calling the dwarf’s name.

With a large amount of blood pouring out of the gaping hole in his chest, Mito spat blood out of his mouth and collapsed on the ground. A clear mortal wound, which caused him to die an instant death.

“Y-Youuuuuuu…!” Leticia, driven by rage, tried to stab Reynard, but she couldn’t. “Kyah!” She stopped as she let out a small scream.

The crimson glow emitted by Reynard increased in strength and, with a physical pressure, hit Leticia. At the same time, a red light spread towards Mito’s corpse. Next, it blew Liara, who was rushing towards the fallen Mito.

“Liara-san!”

As Liara’s light body flew out and almost crashed into a pillar, Wynn managed to catch her at the last moment. And then…

“N-N-Now what’s going on…?” Abel’s voice, who was the closest to Mito, came out as if squeezed.

The red light around Mito pulsed repeatedly, and each time it did, Mito’s weak body jumped. They heard a thud, as if something had fallen. When they turned their eyes toward the sound, they saw Reynard’s body lying on the ground. The crimson glow on his body was gone.

“What the hell is going on here?”

No one was able to respond to Wynn’s rapturous question. Finally, the red light enveloping Mito’s body finished throbbing. Then, he slowly rose to his feet. His body was covered with a crimson glow, and his face was not that of a stern-faced, kind-eyed old dwarf that Wynn and the others knew, but of a young dwarf with bright yellow eyes.

“Mito-san?”

“Tch, tch, tch, no. It’s me. Reynard.”

The answer to Wynn’s question was the worst imaginable. Reynard, who had possessed Mito’s body, tapped lightly with the halberd in his hand.

“I see. So I can better understand what the Brave said.” He repeated light jumps on the spot, and then again made a light demonstration with the halberd. It was exactly how Mito moved. “Tch, tch, sorry for my outburst earlier, Brave. You’re right. If you just take power and wield it, you’re no better than a random bar thug. I admit it. I was really a fool.” He closed his eyes and gave a little shake of his head, “I’m so sorry. But don’t worry about it. This time I really do have the power to kill you…”

As Reynard spoke, Leticia threw a slash at him.

Don!

A sword and a halberd, the mere collision of the two weapons was enough to create a thunderous explosion. After the rip through the air, cracks in the surrounding pillars widened and a few rocks tumbled from the ceiling. However, Leticia’s blow was not able to push Reynard’s halberd away. On the contrary, it lightly swept Leticia’s body.

“Tch, tch, tch, don’t be hasty, Brave.”

“Letty’s attack was dodged…”

It was the first time Wynn had witnessed such a thing. No, rather, Leticia, who normally showed a lot of composure in front of any opponent and never attacked by herself, attacked unexpectedly. And moreover, the attack was dodged.

“Letty…” Liara, who was standing next to Wynn, also realized what was happening. She had never heard of a being that could so easily dodge a blow from Leticia, who had manifested the power of the Brave.

“You are right, Brave, I too have gained a body that has traveled across dozens and hundreds of battlefields and fought thousands and thousands of enemies. I have gained that experience. Now, the big difference you were talking about no longer exists, right? So let’s continue, shall we? Let’s continue with the ritual that will make me greater than the Demon King and Conrad Heisenberg.”

And once again, Leticia’s sword and Reynard’s halberd clashed.

◇◆◇◆◇

It was an incredible sight. Reynard kicked the ground. The stone floor shattered where he stepped, and with an explosion that seemed to burst the air, his halberd pierced the sky. Leticia drew back her sword and tried to dodge the blow with the swiftness of a flash. Weapons clashed together, and a series of flashes again. Then, a gust of wind and sparks. Leticia’s body flew backwards like a cannonball. She was thrown into the air in the same position where she had been struck by the halberd, but managed to turn her body and landed on her feet on the pillar she had been about to hit.

Still unable to fully slow down the impact, she took one, two, three steps backwards up the pillar towards the ceiling. Finally, she landed on the ground. And with bated breath, she dropped to one knee.

“Letty…”

Wynn watched the scene with bated breath. For a while now, this had been going on and on. Reynard was attacking and Leticia was defending herself. The flashes of the two blades, quick as lightning, were honestly hard to follow with the eye.

Leticia’s sword technique was the same as Wynn’s, which used various feints to advance the battle to the right, left, up and down. If not for that, Wynn would have lost sight of Leticia’s sword flash and her movements long ago. In fact, Abel already seemed unable to see Leticia’s sword flash, or even her appearance. And not only Abel, even Liara.

As the Brave, Leticia’s power was truly beyond humans. However, Reynard had easily grasped her movements. If Leticia’s fighting style lay in “movement”, Reynard’s style of the Sword Maker was that of “stillness”. He was not fooled by Leticia’s violent movements nor by the various feints she wove in and out of combat, and he would accurately deflect the sword away when approached. Then, when Leticia’s stance collapsed, he delivered powerful blows.

The power of the Brave and that of the God of Destruction were almost evenly matched. And in terms of speed, Leticia, with her light body, had the advantage. But in terms of martial arts and physical strength, Leticia was only slightly behind Reynard.

That’s how Wynn saw it. And even with a slight advantage in speed, Reynard wiped out Leticia’s advantage by applying pressure while staying on the receiving end.

The same thing happened with the magic attacks.

“Take that!”

The light bullets fired by Leticia were easily absorbed by the magic shield created by Reynard. In fact, he freely manipulated the rock floor and threw a large number of stone spears under Leticia’s feet, and when she thought she had dodged them, he rained down stone arrows from the ceiling. Mito’s great experience, as the Sword Crafter, allowed Reynard to expand his offensive magic options, skillfully control Leticia’s movements and take advantage of her agility.

“It can’t be… I can’t believe Letty was pushed like this…” Liara put her hand to her mouth and spoke as if her voice was getting dry. Accompanying her on her journey to defeat the Demon King, Liara had seen many of Letty’s battles. Some of them were certainly tough, and if she made a mistake, she could lose her life.

But that was limited to battles in places where Leticia couldn’t exert her full strength as the Brave. This was the first time she had seen a situation where Leticia was pushed to a head-on clash of power. As Liara watched breathlessly, Leticia was again struck by Reynard’s halberd. And this time, she fell to the ground as it struck her from the air. Unable to stop in time, Leticia’s body bounced a little and then rolled on the ground.

“…Ah… uah…” Leticia let out a small moan.

“…Letty!” Seeing this, Wynn jumped up with his sword at the ready.

“Wynn-kun!”

He heard Liara’s scream trying to stop him, but he wasn’t going to stop. He stepped between Leticia, who was lying on the ground, and Reynard, and held his sword with both hands. As he stepped out of the effect of the defensive magic Liara casted, sand and gravel in the blowing wind hit Wynn’s body and made several small cuts.

“Now I will be your opponent!”

The presence Reynard gave off, now in Mito’s body, was unusual. Reynard’s intimidating presence was incomparable to the presence he had when he was a human mage and not yet transferred into Mito’s body. Not even the dragon Verni, with whom they fought at the cape, gave Wynn such an intimidating feeling.

Wynn wanted to look away from Reynard, who stood before him. His hand was shaking as he held the sword. He wanted to get as far away from Reynard as possible.

“Uooooooooooh!” he gave himself courage by giving a shout. He could not run away. Behind him, a precious girl he loved so much lay wounded.

But ignoring Wynn’s presence, Reynard called Leticia behind him.

“You said it yourself: ‘I have fought in dozens, hundreds even, of battles. I have destroyed thousands, tens of thousands of enemies. It’s only natural that there’s a big difference between you and me, who have spent all your time studying.’

“…Ugh… o… onii-chan…” Leticia finally raised her body.

“Let me answer that. You have never fought an enemy stronger than you. You have never known defeat. That’s why you don’t know how to fight the strong. That’s the difference between you and me right now.” Reynard waved his halberd slightly to the side.

“Uwah!” Just with that, Wynn’s body was about to go flying through the air. But still, stomping desperately, he held on.

“Onii-chan…”

“I hope a mere human like you won’t interfere in the supreme battle between two beings infinitely closer to God.”

“That’s… exactly what I’m going to do.”

The flash of the halberd should have been a warning to the meddling Wynn. But still he refused to back down, and for the first time, Mito-Reynard looked at him.

“It is true that my power is not as great as yours. I don’t even have magical power. But I’m still Letty’s master. And more importantly! I can’t overlook her being hurt in front of me…!” Wynn shouted.

Leticia’s eyes widened.

“Huhuhu… hahahaha. I see. So the Brave is also a woman. But, unfortunately, you don’t have the power to protect her. It’s a shame, really. You, Princess Liara, and that loudmouth over there. I was going to let the three of you see me become Conrad Heisenberg’s successor and be somewhat superior to the Brave. But if you try to interfere with the fulfillment of my great desire, I will show no mercy. I will kill you.” There was murderous intent in his words.

Wynn’s heart clenched with fear. Still, he clung tightly to his sword. It was the only thing he could rely on, for he had aspired to be a knight since he was a boy, and he had been wielding it with Leticia.

“Come on, Brave. Now that you’ve recovered, let’s resume our amusing combat. Oh, yes! That man over there. If I kill the man who loves you first, will you become more powerful? What do you think? If you say yes, then I’ll kill him with my own hands…”

“Reynard von Hoffman.”

Leticia’s calm voice interrupted Reynard’s voice.

“I have only one correction to what you just said.”

“What do you mean? You mean that he’s the guy who loves you? Or is killing him going to make you more powerful?”

“No.” Leticia shook her head slightly, denying Reynard’s words, and moved to Wynn’s side.

“Letty…”

“You said, ‘You’ve never fought an enemy stronger than you’.

“So? If there was an enemy stronger than you, was it the Demon King? But in the end, the Demon King was destroyed by you. That means he was weaker than you, right?”

“I don’t mean the Demon King.”

“Huh? I never heard of anyone stronger than you.”

Leticia gently placed her left hand on Wynn’s chest and smiled at him. Then she looked at Reynard’s face.

“I’m referring, obviously, to my master. Wynn Bird.” Leticia’s expression as she said that name showed unwavering confidence. And the smile on her face was so beautiful that even Reynard couldn’t help but feel admiration for it.

“Ha… hahaha. What a silly thing to say. I can’t feel any power from that man. And you say he’s stronger than you, Brave. How is that possible? If you wanted to, you could put your sword through his chest before he could blink.”

“Yes. And right now, Onii-chan and I are together. Hey, Liara. Remember what I said when I made my triumphant return to the Empire?”

“The words you said at the moment of your return?”

“I said to Raul: ‘If it’s not in the form of a match, Onii-chan might win’.”

“Now that you mention it…”

“What the hell are you talking about?” Mito-Reynard frowned in confusion. “Now you’re reminiscing about old times before you die?”

“Let’s admit it. Reynard. I am not as strong as you. But it is not power that you have gained either, but the experience and battle skills of Mito, the Sword Crafter, which you have taken by possessing his body and which he acquired during his life of over a hundred years. Therefore, I will now leave the rest to someone who can defeat you.”

“Hey, are you trying to bring the Sword Saint of Lyon with you? It is true that a Sword Saint might be able to match the skill that resides in this body. But, even so, that person would be only a human being. He wouldn’t be able to defeat me with the power of a god within me.”

“Hey, Onii-chan.”

“Letty.”

Leticia turned to Wynn.

“My swordsmanship wasn’t as good as Mito-san. It’s to be expected knowing that Mito-san is the Sword Crafter. A great person. Raul probably doesn’t compare to him either. But…” Leticia cut off her words there and put her own hand over Wynn’s that held the sword. “But I only know of one person in the world who has a sword skill that can match Mito-san.” Leticia laughed softly. A laugh that came from pride, as if she wanted to brag about something. “And that person is my master. The person I love. The man I love the most. The person I’ve always admired. Ever since I was a little girl… and even now. I’m sure I’ll always be looking up to him, and one day I hope to reach him.”

“Letty… that’s…”

…You’re wrong. I’m the one who sees things that way. I’m the one who wants to be by Letty’s side.

Leticia gently covered Wynn’s mouth with her lips as he tried to say this. Wynn froze in surprise. It seemed like a very long time, but actually, it was probably only a few seconds. Leticia released his lips and gave Wynn an embarrassed but very happy smile.

“So, Wynn. Show them your skill with the sword. My beloved master, whom not even the two strongest, the Sword Saint and the Sword Crafter can ignore.”

Wynn’s body was covered with the same golden glow that used to cover Leticia.
