Chapter 24: London Chronicles (2)

Kate leaned against Angela's shoulder, her body shaking with continuous sobs. While she didn't respond directly, her reaction implicitly acknowledged the matter at hand. The little girl sighed, recalling that in her previous life, she had experienced a period of despair after her father's death. But Mr. Beckinsale had seemed in good spirits just last Christmas. How could he pass away like this?

[Note from the author: The death of Kate Beckinsale's father deviates from reality. Unless it poses a problem that could completely disrupt the novel's structure in the future, please refer to this chapter as a reference~]

Angela wanted to inquire about what happened, but Kate cried so sorrowfully in her arms that she couldn't find the words. She could only offer continuous comfort while a mix of emotions surged within her heart. Memories of the days when she herself had once succumbed to despair similar to Kate's flashed through her mind.

Finally, Kate ceased crying and sat back on the sofa. Angela swiftly went to the restroom, retrieved a clean towel, dampened it, and handed it to her.

"Thank you," Kate whispered, then tilted her head back and placed the entire towel over her face. After a while, she let out a long sigh, removed the towel and wiped her cheeks. Then, she sat up straight and gazed at the little girl standing beside her with slightly reddened eyes.

The two of them locked eyes for a moment, then simultaneously said, "I'm sorry." The simultaneous apology startled them both, and they burst into gentle laughter together.

"I'm sorry, Angie. I shouldn't have yelled at you," Kate said softly, covering her forehead. She looked much better now, with some color returning to her face.

"It should be me apologizing, Kate. I didn't know that Mr. Richard had..." The little girl shrugged, leaving the sentence unfinished.

Kate fell silent for a moment, wiping away the tears that were on the brink of falling from her eyes. She gently shook her head. "It's okay. I just... I just..." She lifted her head, attempting to force a smile, but it resembled more like anguish.

"No one tells me 'I love you' before I go to bed anymore. No one spontaneously performs for me when I'm happy. No one takes me to the set to play on their shoulders anymore..." Kate lowered her head, running her slender fingers through her hair, her voice choked, growing increasingly distressed.

Angela inwardly sighed and once again enveloped Kate's head in her arms. She knew that from heron it's just Kate and her mother at home. In front of her mother, she naturally had to appear strong, comforting her and listening to her mother's words. But who would she have to rely on and confide in?

The little girl gently stroked Kate's short hair, attentively listening to her intermittent ramblings about her father, she felt deeply saddened as well. Calculating that it had been two months since her last letter, Mr. Richard must have passed away at least half a month ago. The kind of days she must have endured in these past two weeks could be imagined. Some things are only truly cherished after they're lost, just like back then... When she snapped out of her thoughts, Kate had stopped talking and fallen asleep in her arms.

"Damn it, why is it that when we're alone together, I always seem more like the older sister?" The little girl rolled her eyes, exasperated.

"I'm seven years younger than her, how could that be?" Angela sighed and gently placed her on the sofa, she found a pillow and a blanket to cushion and cover her.

She slept deeply, breathing peacefully. Exhaustion marked her beautiful face. The little girl gently brushed her short hair. The present Kate Beckinsale was already 18 years old, and her delicate features faintly showcased the grace and charm she would possess in the future. In her previous life, the little girl had been a devoted fan of Kate's movies. As she watched Kate sleeping, mischievous thoughts surged in Angela's mind. Without much consideration, she leaned down and lightly kissed her forehead.

After the kiss, the little girl immediately covered her face, her cheeks burning.

If kissing Jessica in the early hours of today was crossing boundaries, then what was happening now?

"Yes, I admired her. I desired her. But that was in the past! I am a girl now! A girl!"

Angela kept patting her cheeks and took deep breaths, finally calming down. She didn't dare to gaze at the slumbering Kate any longer. She stood up, put on an apron, clumsily draped a towel over her head and began cleaning the room.

Because Kate was asleep, Angela had to be as quiet as possible while tidying up the room. It not only took her more time but also more energy. It was barely dusk when she finally managed to make the dirty and disheveled room presentable. Sunlight rarely penetrated the thick London clouds, but it managed to cast a faint golden glow through the windows.

The little girl sighed, straightened her body, and lazily stretched. Her back and legs were slightly sore. Such mild labor had been nothing in her previous life, but being a little girl had made her more delicate. Angela clapped her hands, sensing something, and turned her head. Kate, lying on the sofa, had already opened her eyes and was silently observing her.

"Hey, dear, do you plan on lying there and watching me work forever?" The little girl tilted her head, hands on her hips, and reproached.

Kate slowly propped herself up and smiled gently at her. "Thank you, Angela."

"Alright, Kate," Angela lowered the towel from her head, shook her long hair, and approached her, lowering her body to touch her forehead. She softly said, "Please don't continue like this. Richard wouldn't want it in heaven."

"Yes, I know. Thank you, Angela. Thank you." Kate suddenly embraced the little girl, resting her head lightly on her shoulder, and murmured with her eyes closed.

The little girl comfortingly patted her back, she appeared calm on the surface but deep within her, her emotions were in disorder. Being so close to Kate, she could feel the contours of her body being separated only by a shirt.

"Damn it, what's wrong with me?" The little girl clenched her teeth, attempting to suppress her rapid breathing.

"I have never felt like this when engaging in intimate actions before. Could it be... Could it be... Could it be that I'm starting to develop desires? Damn it, even if hormones are increasing, they should be directed elsewhere... No, no, no! Absolutely not. It's fine as it is! It's fine as it is!"

Realizing that Kate still stared at her, Angela quickly took a step back. Angela's face displayed a faint blush, and she seemed hesitant to meet Kate's gaze.

"What's wrong? Is something the matter?" Kate asked curiously.

"No, nothing. I'm fine," Angela swiftly regained her composure, befitting of someone in their "forties." She changed the subject and said, "I've told you numerous times, Kate, you would look even better with longer hair."

Kate tugged at her short hair and sighed, "I know."

The little girl scratched her head and, as if compelled, asked, "Do you have a boyfriend?"

Kate paused for a moment and chuckled, shaking her head. "Why are you asking me that?"

"I was just curious about your love life," Angela made a face to mask her own embarrassment.

"Damn it! My love life doesn't need an 11-year-old brat like you worrying about it!" Kate's face immediately reddened, and she waved her fist. Not noticing the expression on the little girl's face, she thought Angela was trying to divert her attention. She was grateful, yet at the same time embarrassed.

Meanwhile, Angela was even more perplexed. She remembered that Kate had a live-in boyfriend before she went to Hollywood. That guy who played the werewolf leader Lucian in "Underworld"... Yes, his name was Michael Sheen.

In '99, Kate even gave birth to a daughter with him. However, over these past few years, Angela had seen Kate at least two or three times a year and never noticed her with a boyfriend. Could it be that her own little revelation had caused some turmoil and driven that guy away? Yet, upon careful recollection, Kate hardly had any male friends. It was rather peculiar.

Weren't Western women more open-minded? Although she couldn't solve the puzzle, Angela suddenly felt relieved and at ease.

At that moment, both of their stomachs growled simultaneously. Kate and Angela exchanged a glance and burst into laughter together.

"Alright, miss, let me change clothes and wash my hair, and then we'll go out to eat," Kate said with a smile as she ruffled the little girl's hair, standing up and heading to her bedroom.

"I saw there's still half a pizza in the fridge. How about we heat it up in the microwave later?" Angela suggested as she tidied up her clothes.

"If you want to spend the night at Maston Hospital tonight, I don't mind, but please don't count on me," Kate's voice faintly reached Angela from the bedroom

"Oh my goodness, how long have you been holding that in?" Angela wrinkled her brow, waved her hand in front of her face, and gave up.

Although it usually takes a while for women to change clothes, Kate didn't keep the little girl waiting for long. She quickly emerged, towel-drying her hair. Her white long-sleeved T-shirt was tasteful, and the women's jeans accentuated her slender legs. It would be even more perfect with a pair of women's low-heeled sandals. Unfortunately, perhaps influenced by the little girl, she wore white running shoes instead. Along with her short hair, she had a tomboyish look.

"Oh, by the way, how did you come to London? It's not summer vacation yet," Kate suddenly asked.

"Well..." Angela pondered for a moment and decided to be honest, "I came to London to film a movie."

Upon hearing the words "to film a movie" Kate paused briefly but she quickly regained her composure and asked in astonishment, "Film a movie?"

"Absolutely," the little girl shrugged and added, "My agent is downstairs. If you don't believe me, you can ask him."

Kate took a few seconds to process this information and then fired off a series of questions:

"Why did you decide to come and film a movie?"

"Did Mr. Mason agree to let you film a movie?"

"You didn't just run away on your own like you did before, did you?!"

"Alright, Kate!" Angela playfully rolled her eyes. "I've already told you. My agent is downstairs. If you have any doubts, you can ask him."

After a pause, she noticed the lingering doubt on Kate's face so she continued, "Here's what we'll do, Kate. Let's go eat first, and tonight I'll explain everything to you in detail, okay?"
