Chapter 68: Transformation

"Hey, Angela, are you off to shoot another movie?"

"How many celebrities are in this one? Introduce them to us!"

"Yeah, what's the content of the movie? Tell us about it!"

Facing the swarm of girls after class, Angela raised her hands in exasperation. "Wait, wait! I just took some time off, why does everyone assume I went to shoot a movie? Can't I take a break for other reasons? Like... like... like..."

She struggled to find a good excuse for a while, but in truth, she had no other legitimate reason to take a month off. She didn't want to make up stories about her grandparents being sick or herself falling ill – she didn't want to bring any curses upon herself or her family.

"Alright, what do you want to know?" Facing the girls sitting in a half-circle around her, Angela asked with a dejected tone. But before they could ask, she suddenly stood up, placing her hands on the desk. "Listen, everyone, shooting a movie isn't all fun and games. You have to completely and unconditionally obey the director!"

She left her desk and walked back and forth in the aisle, waving her hands like she was performing in an opera. "If the director doesn't let you eat, you can't eat. If the director wants you to cry, you must cry right away. If the director wants to shoot at midnight, you... can't sleep!"

The girls around her widened their eyes, while Angela continued, "If you can't do what the director asks, then you'll get scolded! Without mercy! They'll scold you until you cry, and no one will sympathize with you, no one will pity you, because you didn't do your job and getting scolded is what you deserve! This is what shooting a movie is like! Do you still think it's fun?"

Angela finally concluded her speech and took a step to her right, waiting for a while until one girl raised her hand and asked, "Angela, is what you said true?"

"Oh, dear, I promise—it's not!" she replied, wearing a sly smile. Angela then opened the door beside her and quickly ran out, leaving behind a buzz of excitement.

Still laughing she ran to the grassy area outside the building and finally stopped. Basking in the sunlight, she breathed a sigh of relief, recalling how the girls believed her made-up stories. It was quite amusing. Well, in the past she had played similar pranks, but she had never felt so happy about it.

Maybe it was because she had come to terms with herself and let go of her burdens?

"Angela! I waited for you under the tree for five minutes, and you're just wandering around here. Have you turned into a lost soul since you came back from New York?" Jessica's angry voice came from the side.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Jessie. I was surrounded by the girls," Angela quickly hugged her, surprising Jessica.

"What's happened?" Jessica looked puzzled.

"What do you mean, something happened?" Angela shrugged.

"Come on, Angela, you're like two different people now compared to a month ago. Remember those two weeks before you went to shoot《Hide and Seek》? You wouldn't even hug me and later you wouldn't even hold my hand. I thought you started to dislike me. But when I saw you again on the school bus this morning, you seemed like your old self again." Jessica paused and tilted her head. "No, wait, there still seems to be a difference, but I don't know what it is."

"Alright, forget about the differences. Am I not still me?" Angela pinched Jessica's cheek.

"Okay, but... what happened a month ago?" Jessica thought for a moment and asked again.

"Well, I got too immersed in my role," Angela rolled her eyes and explained, "You know, it's a horror movie and I became overly engrossed in understanding my character. I completely immersed myself in it to the point where it almost drove me crazy, so...," she shrugged.

"Really? Are you okay?" Jessica grabbed Angela's shoulders in surprise and studied her face closely.

"Alright, alright, Jessie, if I had a problem, I wouldn't be standing here in front of you now." Angela's eye roll was accompanied by a slight sense of gratitude.

"Are you sure? I heard people with dissociative identity disorder don't realize their other personalities." Jessica continued with a serious tone.

"Even if I don't realize it myself, do you think the people around me wouldn't notice?" Angela found it somewhat amusing and simply grabbed Jessica's shoulders, leaning in close and said with a fierce expression, "Okay, Jessie if I really developed a second personality, the first thing it would do is come looking for you!"

Jessica leaned back and playfully stuck out her tongue, changing the subject. "By the way, what did you say on the school bus? Did Lindsay go to your place?"

Mentioning Lindsay, Angela let go of her pout and sighed. "Yes, yesterday, after I came home from New York and had dinner, she showed up at my place recklessly—she's such a headstrong girl. What if I hadn't been home yesterday? I worry about what could have happened."

"Is something going on at Lindsay's home?" Jessica asked with concern.

"Well... her parents were arguing, which upset her, so she ran away and didn't want to go back. As a result, she spent the night with me, and Mr. David took her back this morning."

"She slept with you?" Jessica pouted unhappily, but Angela didn't see her expression.

"Yes, she came all alone, looking so pitiful," Angela crossed her arms and sighed, gazing at the sky.

When Lindsay asked to sleep together last night, she had initially wanted to refuse. It wasn't like when she was in Canada anymore, and now that she had a better understanding of herself, Angela didn't know if she might do something reckless. However, when she saw the pitiful look on the redhead's face and thought about her family situation, Angela couldn't harden her heart. Couldn't she offer a little warmth? After all, her debut work had been shamelessly plagiarized by herself!

So, in the end, they slept together. Thankfully, Lindsay fell asleep quickly, probably from exhaustion. But just like Avril, she clung to Angela, holding onto her as if she were hugging a stuffed toy.

Did every girl like hugging stuffed toys to sleep? At least Angela wasn't like that... well, she didn't consider herself a typical girl.

Smelling the fragrance of the girl in her arms—realizing it was her own scent mixed with Lindsay's—Angela's heart began to wander, but she quickly scolded herself for such thoughts. She resisted the temptation to steal a kiss on Lindsay's cheek, making sure she was sound asleep.

Repeating in her mind, "She's only 7 years old! She's only 7 years old!" Angela reminded herself of the importance of appropriate boundaries.

She chastised herself, realizing that although she used to have a fondness for loli characters, she wasn't interested in little girls romantically or otherwise. The mere thought of any inappropriate actions was alarming.

If anyone discovered such thoughts, she could face serious consequences and it would undoubtedly lead to a disastrous situation. Angela couldn't risk being accused of anything remotely resembling child molestation—she knew how severe the consequences could be. The idea of a 12-year-old girl mistreating a 7-year-old was entirely unthinkable and appalling.

With a peculiar expression, Angela suddenly felt a pain on her cheek, snapping back to reality to find Jessica pinching her cheeks unhappily. "You're always daydreaming, Angela. Can't you stop spacing out?" Jessica chided, bringing Angela back to the present moment.

Angela blushed a little. She had actually been thinking about Lindsay and it was frustrating. She couldn't just daydream in front of others!

She cleared her throat and asked, "Alright, what's up, Jessie?"

"I'm curious why she didn't come to my place but went to yours instead. You know, relatively speaking my house is much closer to hers than yours, and she often comes to play at my place. So why did she choose to go to your house?" Jessica still pouted, sounding a bit sour.

She refrained from saying the part about "sleeping with you."

Angela didn't catch the unsaid words but pondered for a moment before replying, "Maybe she was afraid that if she went to your house, her parents would find her and take her back. It's really strange since we haven't even exchanged phone calls."

Jessica seemed to accept that explanation, shrugged, and didn't press further. She changed the topic and said, "By the way, have you seen the movie《Sleepless in Seattle》? Meg played it amazingly well; I absolutely love her!"

"《Sleepless in Seattle》?" Angela was taken aback for a moment, then remembered that Jodie Foster had mentioned the movie was released on Valentine's Day, February 14.

She wondered how Nancy's version of the film would turn out. What would be different about Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's performances compared to the original?

"Shoot, I forgot to watch it." Angela spread her hands and then asked, "What do you think, Jessie?"

"I think... it's really good." Jessica pondered for a while and gave that brief comment.

Angela rolled her eyes at herself for seeking Jessica's review. Was she losing her mind? With the premiere of《Sleepless in Seattle》on February 14, she couldn't even check newspaper reviews. It was frustrating! She hoped Nancy's version would receive positive reviews as well.

Feeling a bit helpless, Angela suddenly remembered something. This year, she had sold three scripts, including《Hide and Seek》and《Leon: The Professional,》alongside 《Sleepless in Seattle.》However, the number of sales wasn't her primary concern, what truly mattered was if these three movies would become huge successes—and she had no doubt they would.

Angela recalled the estimated box office numbers for《Sleepless in Seattle,》and with its Valentine's Day premiere and no technical difficulties, it was bound to perform well. As for《Hide and Seek,》having Al Pacino and Jodie Foster on board, with David Fincher directing and the plot holes she had fixed in the script, it was likely to outperform the original version, especially considering inflation.

《Leon: The Professional》had a box office performance she couldn't recall, but being considered a classic it couldn't have been disappointing.

Yet, the problem was that with all three movies doing exceptionally well, she might not be able to escape the attention of movie studios.

Angela felt a headache coming her way. If only she had used a different name as the screenwriter!
